We desperately need help with Eroff's possibilities for 
downloadable softfonts.

After following the instructions in the manual (Chapter 2. pp 26--40),
we cannot advance any further beyond the error message:

Tue Jul 10 14:42: elj2: Can't load AI100RPN.R8P: Font storage limit exceeded

in a test file using this font.
The command that generated this message was:

troff -Tlj+.B test | elj | elj2 -Xt -b1.5m >test.pcl

where:
$(EROFF_FONTDIR)/devlj+.B is our soft-fonts directory, containing a
description for (a.o.) AI%%0RPN.??!
and:
AI100RPN.R8P is a file in $(EROFF_FONTDIR)/devlj.sf/AI
