Getting a pixel independant layer (a la PostScript) on top of the existing low-level libraries would make applications more portable (at the price of some speed). This obviously includes outline fonts and possibly a font cache. Well, this is a bit like the difference between MacPaint and MacDraw. Of course this is available under X11/NeWS but having to deal with yet another different language is not really exciting (PostScript with window extensions). Is it dreaming to think about dynamic X extensions in C instead of NeWS interpreted PostScript; send a C routine to the server which compiles it and adds it to the available extensions in the X protocol.
