Doubt if I've used xterm more than 5% of my shell-interaction time in the last year. A version of Andrew 'typescript' is more usual. In addition to proportionally spaced fonts, it supports rasters, animations, sound objs, etc., in the sense that if that is what appears on your standard output, that is what the typescript displays to you. And the rest of the time is in GNU Emacs 'shell'. But we do have some programs with a hard-wired need for a vt100...
