Most manufacturers (IBM, Graphon, HDS, for instance) who have printer ports on their terminals use a socket interface to the OS on the terminal for downloading to the port. This method bypasses any present or future X windows security mechanisms, and only works on a TCP/IP transport layer. An X extension for output or input from ports on the server is the natural way to handle printer ports, and other ports as well (eg. data collection ports).
