They try dropping a stationary beacon and heading away from it, but X! shortly discover they're heading back towards it. X! As the crew's concern increases, a Romulan ship appears and fires. X! .sp .5v X! The Enterprise destroys it with one torpedo, X! and are puzzled to detect no debris. X! Then, their sister ship, the Yamato, appears, but does not respond to hails. X! Riker and Worf beam over to check it out. X! While they find a strange, X! Escher-like joining of bridges, the Enterprise sees an opening, but cannot X! leave while they away team is on the Yamato, and communications are out. X! After they let the exit vanish, communications mysteriously come back up, X! and the away team, jumpy, is beamed back aboard just as the Yamato vanishes. X! Several similar openings appear, X! but vanish whenever the ship tries to move towards them. X! Professor Moriarty appears, and miraculously, calls X! up the computer arch himself. X! Shortly afterward, Geordi and Data hear Pulaski scream, X! and Data quickly deduces Pulaski has been abducted. X! X! Their first attempt to find her leads them to a dead end. X! When the Inspector gives ``Holmes'' a mystery to solve, X! Data quickly does so, but says it does not X! connect with their search, leading Geordi to conclude that the computer is X! running an independent program. X! They find Moriarty, who worries them with his talk of Data being X! ``Holmes\-yet not Holmes'', and then shocks them by calling for the arch. X! He gives Data a picture of the Enterprise, and Data and Geordi leave in a panic. X! They try to shut down the holodeck, but cannot. X! Apparently, Geordi's instruction to create an adversary worthy X! of \f3Data\f1, and not Holmes, X! set up a chain reaction that gives Moriarty both power and consciousness. X! He claims to no longer be Moriarty, and says he X! wants merely to continue to exist...outside the holodeck. X! Picard sympathizes, as ``Moriarty'' is no longer evil, but cannot help. X! Meanwhile, two small interplanetary vessels lock their lasers on the Enterprise X! and the leaders of both ships demand Okona's surrender. X! First, Debin accuses Okona of getting his daughter, Yanar, pregnant; X! then Kushell, with his son Benzan at his side, X! charges the dashing Captain with stealing his nation's prized Jewel of Thesia. Okona quickly charms Riker, Data and Wesley, and starts romancing the female X! transporter chief only seconds after coming on board. X! He befriends Data, X! discussing such things as humor and sex appeal, and after a short stop in X! Engineering, leaves Data and enters the transporter chief's room. X! X! Data, convinced he doesn't understand humor, talks to Guinan, who directs him X! to a ``higher power''\-in his case, a smarter computer. X! While Picard considers options, a second ship shows up, holding X! Kushell of the planet Streleb, who also demands Okona. X! Picard sends Worf to X! bring Okona (currently in another woman's room) up to the bridge. X! When he reaches the bridge, Okona tells Picard he is not a criminal, X! but refuses to say why Debin or Kushell might want him. X! When Picard asks, he finds that Debin X! is convinced Okona has fathered an as-yet unborn child on his daughter Yanar, X! and Kushell claims he stole a valuable jewel. X! X! Okona still insists he is not a criminal, and suggests that the Enterprise X! manage to stay out of things by simply repairing his ship and letting him X! run off. X! After talking to Wesley, however, Okona decides to stay and make a stand. X! Both sets of parties beam aboard, and after some bickering, X! Okona ``decides'' to marry Yanar. X! However, Kushell's son Benzan objects, and the real X! truth of what happened comes out: Benzan and Yanar are in love. X! She's carrying his child, X! and Benzan gave the jewel of Thesia to Okona to give to Yanar. X! All involved parties except Okona leave, satisfied. X! X! Data brings Guinan onto the holodeck, where he performs in front of an audience. X! Data develops a particularly strong rapport with the brilliant scientist, X! who is bravely enduring the final stages of a terminal disease. X! Shortly after Graves tells Data of his remarkable ability to transfer X! human knowledge into a computer, he dies. X! X! Back on board the Enterprise, X! Data displays extremely uncharacteristic behavior, X! going so far as to accuse Picard of having lustful intentions toward Kareen. X! After an engineering test reveals no mechanical malfunctions with him, X! Although they depart to help the Constantinople, they drop off Troi, Worf, Data, X! and Dr. Selar, a Vulcan, at near-warp velocities on Graves's world. X! Graves's assistant, the lovely Kareen Brianon, greets them. X! When asked why she abruptly cut off transmission earlier, X! it's revealed that Dr. Graves didn't know they were coming. X! Graves appears, quite irascible, but he grudgingly allowed Selar to examine him. X! While she does this, he becomes fascinated by Data. X! He claims to have taught Noonian Soongh, Data's creator, everything he knew, X! and refers to himself as Data's grandfather. X! Selar then reports: Graves has Darnay's disease, which is terminal. X! X! Graves starts talking only to Data and retreats into seclusion with him. X! He insists Data call him ``Grandpa'', X! and reveals that he doesn't actually believe he'll die, X! as he's learned a way to transfer his mind into a computer. X! When Data, while discussing death, mentions his ``off'' switch, Graves gets a X! cunning look in his eye. X! While Troi, Worf and Selar discuss Graves with Kareen X! (and Troi tells her that Graves is quite attracted to her), Data comes out and X! says Graves just died a few minutes ago, in his arms. X! X! The Enterprise, which has by now returned, beams back the away team, and X! prepares to take Kareen to a starbase. X! Data, however, starts acting a bit strangely. X! He delivers an overly sentimental speech at Graves's funeral, and X! seems to be becoming attracted to Kareen. X! Picard talks to Data later, but is X! convinced he's just been trying a bit too hard to be human. X! This opinion changes, however, when Data becomes insubordinate, X! and accuses Picard of having ``unprofessional'' intentions toward Kareen. X! Troi, unbelievably, senses \f3jealousy\f1 from Data. X! Picard orders Data to submit to an examination by X! Geordi, and when that comes up empty, Deanna gives him a psychiatric test. X! X! She then reports her disturbing results to Picard: there are two different X! personalities in Data's mind, and the irrational one is growing, to the extent X! that the Data they know may soon be lost. X! Data, meanwhile, goes to Ten-Forward, X! where he tells Kareen that he is Graves, transferred into Data. X! He declares his love for her, X! and says he'll build an android body for her as well. X! When she declines, he accidentally hurts her, then departs for Engineering. X! X! Picard confronts Data/Graves in Engineering and demonstrates to him how violent X! he's become. X! Enterprise is unexpectedly diverted to the Ramatis star system X! to transport a famous mediator named Riva to the site of a bitter planetary X! conflict on Solais Five. X! X! To the surprise of the Away Team, headed by Captain Picard, it soon becomes X! apparent that Riva is deaf. X! Although he can understand what the crew is saying by reading their lips, X! his only way of communicating is through the Chorus, X! a group of three people, X! each possessing a distinctive aspect of Riva's personality, X! who read the mediator's thoughts telepathically and translate them into words. X! X! En route to Solais Five, Troi and Riva develop a strong mutual affection. X! Left alone together, Riva communicates his loving feelings toward Troi using X! thoughts and crude sign language. X! X! Arriving at the war-torn planet, Riva, his Chorus and the Away team prepare X! to meet with the leaders of the centuries-old dispute. X! But when the combatants face each other to begin the peace talks, X! a dissident soldier opens fire with his weapon, killing Riva's Chorus. X! Back on Solais Five, Riva dismisses Data as his translator, X! announcing that he plans to teach warring leaders sign language so that X! they can communicate with him and, in turn, with each other. X .HL X--- 576,621 ---- X .IX "Ramatis star system" X! The Enterprise enters the Ramatis system to take on board Riva, a famous X! mediator who is needed to resolve a dispute on the planet Solais 5. They quickly discover that Riva is a rather unusual fellow: he is deaf, and X! communicates through the three members of his Chorus, who receive his thoughts X! and speak for him, each conveying a different part of his personality. X! Riva quickly becomes attracted to Deanna, who reciprocates. X! X! At the briefing, Riva hears both societies (who have been fighting for fifteen X! centuries) are on the verge of extinction, then dismissed the background of the X! conflict as irrelevant. X! He asks what has recently changed to make them desire peace, X! then says that he's sure he'll find an answer somehow\-he always has before. X! As they approach Solais 5, they find the cease-fire has been broken. X! Riva, from the bridge, convinces them to cease hostilities long enough to meet X! with him. X! X! Riva, with an away team, beams down and begins making preparations for the X! meeting. X! Unfortunately, when it begins, one of the delegates who isn't so thrilled X! by the concept of peace tries to kill Riva, but instead kills his Chorus. X! Hostilities recommence, as Riva and the others beam back aboard. X! Realizing that Riva uses some kind of gestural language, Picard orders Data to X! learn it. X! (Meanwhile, Pulaski tells Geordi it may be possible to give him X! normal vision, and Geordi says he'll consider it.) X! X! After he does so, Riva manages to communicate that he only wants to go back to X! Ramatis now, saying he ``cannot'' and ``will not'' go back to Soleas, and that X! Data ``is a fine machine, but he cannot take the place of my Chorus.'' X! Picard agrees to take him back, but says his decision is regrettable. X! X! Troi comes to Riva and tells him she is going to try to mediate, and asks him X! for suggestions. X! Riva suggests she find something the two factions have in common, X! no matter how small, X! and says the real trick is ``turning a disadvantage into an advantage.'' X! An emergency call for help from a Federation supply ship sends the U.S.S. X! Enterprise racing on a course to determine the nature of the crisis. X! X! Upon visually scanning the bridge of the U.S.S. Lantree, X! the crew is shocked to learn that everyone on the troubled vessel is dead. X! Dr. Pulaski determines that the crew members, X! who had been examined and found to be in perfect health eight weeks earlier, X! have all died of old age. X! The Lantree is immediately placed under quarantine and the Enterprise X! heads toward the ship's last port of call, X! the Darwin Genetic Research Station, to warn them of the potential danger. X! X! Unfortunately, the Enterprise discovers that the residents of the Darwin X! Station are suffering from the same mysterious affliction. X! Picard is asked to evacuate the children of the station, X! who have been engineered to become super-specimens through genetic research. X! Although the children have been kept in isolation and show no signs of X! infection, a cautious Picard allows Pulaski to examine just one child X! until the nature of the virulent disease can be determined. X! X! To further eliminate any danger to the crew, X! Data and Pulaski board a shuttlecraft and have the boy beamed to that X! vessel so that he can be evaluated in a safe environment. X! But moments after Pulaski begins to examine the boy, X! she is stricken by the mysterious disease, X! which immediately begins working its rapid aging process on her. X! X! In a desperate attempt to save Pulaski's life, X! Picard orders the crew to modify the transporter unit so that it can filter X! out any changes in the doctor by using a sample cell of Pulaski's DNA taken X! before her exposure to the infection. X! A short time later, with Picard at the transporter controls, X! Pulaski is safely beamed back aboard the Enterprise and restored to her normal X! age. X .HL X--- 668,721 ---- X .IX "old age disease" X! The Enterprise receives a distress call from the cargo ship USS Lantree. X! They ask for help, and say something about ``dying'', X! then cease responding at all. X! When the Enterprise finds it, they find no life signs, X! but no sign of battle damage. X! Picard accesses the Lantree's computer remotely and calls up their X! viewscreen, where they see evidence that the crew died of extreme old age X! (which is impossible, as Captain Talacca is only Riker's age). X! X! When they download the Lantree's logs, they find that no one on board that ship X! knew what was going on either. X! Pulaski checks their medical histories: they X! were all fine eight weeks ago, and five days ago, the only illness on board was X! a mild case of Thalusian flu, which could never have done something like this. The Enterprise sets quarantine beacons on the Lantree and departs for its last X! port of call, the Darwin Genetic Research Station, both to find out if they know X! anything about what's happened, and to warn them if they do not. When he's beamed aboard, he looks more like 22 than 12, seems X! in perfect health, and is deemed telepathic by Troi. X! When Pulaski wants to take him out of the Styrolite to continue tests, X! however, Picard refuses, because there's no way to isolate Sickbay. X! After discussing alternatives with Deanna X! and Geordi, Pulaski suggests a shuttlecraft, to which Picard agrees. X! Pulaski and Data take the child onto a shuttle, where Pulaski, X! to her surprise, is infected. X! X! The child and the shuttle return to Darwin Station, where Pulaski and Data X! determine that although the children are not carriers, they are the source. X!
