X! goes ``under the knife'', Data finds that the Pakleds have advanced as far as

X! Riker suggests a ruse, and enlists the crew to help convey covertly to Geordi
X! that he should give them weapons, then take them away at the right moment.

X! Unfortunately, Picard's operation is going badly.
X! He is dying, and the only person qualified to help him is Pulaski.
X! The Enterprise hurriedly implements their ruse to save Geordi.
X! Geordi gives them photon torpedoes, then, while
X! pretending to come over to their side and help, disarms them just as the
X! Enterprise discharges their hydrogen exhaust, which Geordi tells the Pakleds
X! was the ``Crimson Forcefield'', which disarmed them.

X! which arrives at the C.C.C.C. in time for Pulaski to save Picard.

X! After a little research, they 
X! discover the beacon was used by the European Hegemony (a mid-22nd century 
X! organization), but find no record of a ship leaving for that sector.
X! Then, unexpectedly, Worf passes out.
X! Pulaski tells Worf that she's found he has the Klingon equivalent to measles,
X! but tells Picard something else, to save Worf's reputation.

X! Data suggests to Picard that he look for a manifest of whatever's on that ship,
X! and he then finds a record of the S.S.Mariposa, carrying a strange mixture of
X! technology and back-to-nature supplies.
X! When they enter the Ficus sector, they see that the sun is flaring up,
X! and Riker is beamed down to one planet in the system,
X! where life readings have been detected.
X! Later, when the people start beaming up, O'Brien finds they've brought cattle,
X! chickens, and so forth with them.

X! En route to the conference, Picard and the crew are taken aback by the
X! unexpected arrival of Mrs. Troi, who also happens to be on her way to the
X! meeting on Pacifica.

X! intercepts the Enterprise, carrying another delegate: Lwaxana Troi.

X! Lwaxana comes on board and quickly annoys everyone.
X! When Riker decides to carry her bags,
X! she telepathically asks Deanna, ``is he still yours?'', and 
X! remarks that perhaps the custom of men being owned should be started again.
X! She invites Picard to dinner, and he accepts, believing the entire bridge crew
X! are invited.
X! As he quickly discovers upon entering, however, Lwaxana intends
X! this to be an ``intimate'' dinner for two.

X! She flirts outrageously with Picard, who manages to save himself by calling to
X! the bridge to invite Data down for dessert, telling Lwaxana that Data's
X! after-dinner conversation is ``legendary''.
X! Data's utterly tedious anecdotes bring a
X! quick end to the dinner, and Picard extends his gratitude to Data.
X! Deanna, having already told Pulaski that her mother is undergoing the
X! Betazoid version of menopause, asks her mother what she plans to do,
X! only to hear that she plans to marry Picard!
X! Deanna explains to Picard that Lwaxana's sex drive has gone up
X! by at least a factor of four with the onset of ``the phase'', and tells him of 
X! her mother's plans.
X! Picard, sensibly, puts Riker in command of the bridge,
X! and runs to hide on the holodeck as Dixon Hill.

X! After settling in and dismissing various scenarios as too violent, Picard
X! invites ``Hill'''s secretary Madeline to Rex's Bar for a drink.
X! Meanwhile, when she can't find Picard, Lwaxana adopts her alternate plan,

X! Riker, also not surprisingly, flees with Data to the same holodeck to tell
X! Picard about this development (and the revival of the Antedians).

X! She reveals that the Klingons began their voyage while the Federation was

X! and that if they awaken within striking range of key Federation outposts,

X! Worf, shunning the emissary's friendly advances, reluctantly follows Picard's
X! orders to meet with K'Ehleyr about the volatile situation with the T'Ong.

X! revealing that the two were once linked romantically.
X! After a bitter argument, K'Ehleyr storms out.

X! To work out her frustrations, K'Ehleyr goes to the Holodeck, where she does
X! Worf's rigorous calisthenics program.
X! Worf joins her for the exercise,
X! which pits them in battle against deadly alien warriors.
X! After completing the program,
X! an aroused Worf grabs K'Ehleyr and they consummate their passion.
X! At dawn, Worf asks her to take the Klingon oath of marriage which traditionally
X! follows intimacy, but she refuses.

X! Meanwhile, the Enterprise approaches the T'Ong, whose newly awakened crew
X! members begin firing at the ship.
X! To prevent a fatal face-off, Worf dresses
X! in full Klingon Captain's regalia and presents himself to the T'Ong as the
X! commander of the Enterprise and demands their surrender.
X! He convinces the Klingon leaders that the war ended during the T'Ong's mission
X! and that the Klingons are now peaceful members of the Federation.

X! Following the T'Ong's surrender, K'Ehleyr prepares to take command of the
X! Klingon vessel and is escorted to the transporter room by Worf.
X! There, the two finally reconcile their differeces and
X! although K'Ehleyr bids him farewell,
X! she leaves Worf with the hope that their paths will cross again.

X! When they arrive, Admiral Gromek tells Picard that a special emissary will be

X! When the emissary arrives (in a Class-8 probe, of all things,
X! so as to arrive quickly), the crew revives K'Ehleyr, a half-human,
X  half-Klingon female.
X! As she enters to begin the briefing, she recognizes and greets Worf,
X! saying ``so this is where you've been hiding\-I told you we'd meet again.''

X! At the briefing, she tells them of a Klingon ship, the T'Ong, which set out on
X! a mission with the crew in suspended animation 75 years ago, while the Klingons
X! and Federation were still at war, and that the nearest Klingon ship is 48 hours
X! behind them, which may be too late.
X! Their task is to prevent the crew from awakening, if possible,
X! and to destroy the ship, if not.
X! Picard, not willing to simply destroy them out of hand,
X! puts K'Ehleyr and Worf to work on finding other options.
X! Unfortunately, the two don't interact very well.
X! K'Ehleyr is anxious to discuss their aborted love affair of six years earlier,
X! but Worf is all business.
X! He searches for their mission and talks of alternatives, but K'Ehleyr
X! says there are no alternatives.
X! Eventually, K'Ehleyr storms to her quarters
X! and smashes a table in frustration.

X! Later, on Troi's advice, she goes to exercise on the holodeck, and ends up
X! using Worf's violent calisthenics program.
X! As she finishes, Worf enters, and
X! when provoked, increases the simulation to ``Level Two''.
X! Both fight, then have a rather passionate encounter.
X! When K'Ehleyr later remarks that Worf always was loath
X! to speak what's on his mind, Worf responds by saying ``no
X! longer'' and beginning to recite the Klingon oath of marriage.
X! K'Ehleyr refuses to take the oath,
X! dishonoring what to Worf are sacred traditions.
X! Meanwhile, they approach the general vicinity of the T'Ong, still with no 
X! options but to destroy the ship if the crew has already awakened.

X! They quickly find the crew has awakened, when it fires on them and then cloaks.
X! Suddenly, Worf has an idea, and it is quickly implemented: when Captain K'Temok
X! of the T'Ong answers the hail, he sees ``Captain'' Worf of the Enterprise
X! informing him the war is long over and ordering them to drop their shields.
X! K'Temok initially refuses, but then agrees when he sees Worf will destroy the
X! T'Ong if not obeyed.
X! K'Ehleyr prepares to beam over to the T'Ong to begin 
X! assimilating them into this century.
X! She confesses to Worf that she was tempted to take the oath,
X! and jibes that next time, ``I won't be so easy to get rid of.''
X! Worf beams her off, saying ``I will not be complete without you.''

X! A simulated war game suddenly turns into a real-life fight for survival when
X! the crew is ambushed by a Ferengi battleship.

X! As part of the first Starfleet Battle Simulation program, Picard and Riker

X! Picard is given command of the Enterprise,
X! while Riker is assigned the Hathaway, a hopelessly unequipped,
X! 80-year-old vessel which he's given 48 hours to outfit for battle.
X! Acting as an observer of the exercise is Kolrami,
X! a master strategist from the Zakdorn race,
X! which is reputed to have the greatest strategic minds in the galaxy.
X! 
X! When Riker and his team beam aboard the Hathaway, they are shocked by its
X! dilapidated condition.
X! It quickly becomes obvious that the outclassed ship's
X! only hope for victory lies in outwitting the Enterprise crew.
X! 
X! Meanwhile, Dr. Pulaski challenges the arrogant Kolrami to play Data in the
X! highly complex game of Strategema.
X! Although Pulaski is certain that the
X! android's skills will prove superior to the Zakdorn's, Kolrami wins.

X! When the war games begin, the Hathaway deftly wins round one by distracting the
X! Enterprise with a holographic image of a Romulan warship, thus giving Riker's
X! crew the chance to record several electronic ``hits.''
X! Moments later, when Picard
X! mistakes a real Ferengi warship for another holograph, he's stunned when the
X! Ferengi launch a ferocious assault.

X! The now-crippled Enterprise is ordered to surrender the Hathaway, which the
X! Ferengi mistakenly believe is armed with a secret weapons system.
X! Unwilling to sacrifice the lives of his friends,
X! Picard masterminds a plan by which the
X! Ferengi think that the Enterprise has blown up the Hathaway, thus allowing the
X! smaller ship to warp speed away to safety.
X! 
X! With the war games completed, Data engages Kolrami in a rematch of Strategema.
X! When Data changes his strategy and forces the game to end in a stalemate,
X! Kolrami storms out, humiliated by the android, as the crew cheers Data's
X! victory.

X! Due to the Borg threat, the Enterprise is taking part in Federation wargames,
X! overseen by the Zakdorn strategist Sirna Kolrami, who is unpleasant, to say the

X! and putting her in simulated combat against the Enterprise.
X! Riker selects his complement of 40, including Worf, Geordi and Wesley.
X! 
X! Before Riker leaves, he invites Kolrami to play a game of \f2strategema\f1, a 
X! game at which Kolrami is a grandmaster.
X! Kolrami easily defeats Riker (who did
X! not expect to win, but merely played for the privilege of playing him), and 
X! Pulaski suggests to Data that he play Kolrami, to knock Kolrami down a few pegs.
X! Riker and company arrive at the Hathaway and are given 48 hours to get her into
X! shape.
X! This may prove difficult, as Geordi finds they have virtually no 
X! dilithium, and no antimatter for the warp drive.
X! Worf considers the possibility
X! of fooling the Enterprise sensors, and Wesley returns to the Enterprise, to
X! pick up a ``science project'' of his which just happens to have antimatter.
X! 
X! Data, put up to the match by Pulaski, plays Kolrami\-and loses.
X! Concerned that his loss may be a sign of a malfunction in his systems,
X! Data goes into seclusion in his quarters,
X! and neither Pulaski nor Troi can help him.
X! Picard, after yelling at Kolrami for his belittling attitude towards Riker,
X! goes to Data's quarters with a no-nonsense attitude and gets Data back
X! to the bridge, where the two confer about Riker's probable tactics.
X! 
X! The simulation commences, and Worf prepares his ``surprise'', creating an 
X! illusory Romulan Warbird for the Enterprise to deal with.
X! Impressed, Picard orders the security code changed.
X! After a short time later, sensors pick up a Ferengi ship coming in,
X! but Picard merely thinks Worf's better than he thought.
X! Unfortunately, it's a real Ferengi ship, and it fuses the Enterprise's
X! connections to its simulated weaponry, cutting off access to the real ones,
X! as well as the transporter circuitry.
X! They demand the Hathaway, convinced soemthing valuable is on board.
X! 
X! Kolrami orders a retreat, but Picard dismisses that as unacceptable.
X! He confers with Riker, who tells them that the Hathaway now has 2 seconds
X! of warp 1 (if the system they patched up holds),
X! and the two come up with a plan.
X! Using one of photon torpedoes they've managed to gain access to, the
X! Enterprise pretends to destroy the Hathaway, which warps away, then frighten
X! off the Ferengi by making their sensors show another starship coming in.
X! Kolrami is forced to confess Riker's good at what he does,
X! then plays a rematch with Data, who humiliates him
X! by playing for an eternal draw.

X! If left unchecked, the microbe will soon reach Riker's brain and kill him.
X! Ironically, Pulaski has no way of decimation the organism
X! without destroying the nerves of the being it's inhabiting.

X! At first, Riker's affliction seems more of a nuisance than a threat.
X! But during a visit with Counselor Troi,
X! his vital signs suddenly plummet and Rike loses consciousness.
X! Although Dr. Pulaski is able to stabilize his condition,
X! she discovers that the organism has spread to Riker's brain.

X! A few hours later, Riker slips into a coma, and Pulaski decides to temporize

X! figures out exactly which emotion he's feeling at the time.
X! Furthermore, each emotion is releasing different brain endorphins, some
X! of which may well be poisonous to the organism.

X! she and Troi find that strong negative emotions drive the organism off.

X! While a stirring speech by Data convinces some colonists to revolt against
X! Gosheven, Picard buys time when he finds a clause in the treaty that allows
X! him to demand third party arbitration of the evacuation dispute.
X! He deliberately chooses a race in hybernation for six months,
X! which forces the Sheliak's hand and they agree to give Picard three weeks to
X! relocate the colonists.

X! the crew doesn't think any humans could possibly be there.

X! but a thriving civilization of over 15,000 people,

X! Further, their leader, Gosheven, boasts of the colony's accomplishments,
X! scorns the Sheliak claim, and refuses to leave.
X! While Data meets and befriends Ard'rian McKenzie,
X! a woman very interested in androids,
X! Picard tries to ask the Sheliak for more time.

X! The Sheliak, unfortunately, are sticklers for the letter of the treaty,
X! and refuse.
X! Data, hearing of the urgency of the situation (three days remain before
X! the Sheliak colony ship arrives), attempts to speak with Gosheven again,

X! Then, he and Ard'rian start spreading the word to the people of
X! the colony, as the Enterprise leaves the system to begin looking for the 
X! Sheliak vessel.

X! Their words have had the effect, however,
X! of making Gosheven call a public meeting, at which Data tries to evoke images
X! of how they will die at the hands of the Sheliak if they do not leave.

X! Data and Ard'rian meet covertly with several colonists, including 
X! Gosheven's two top aides, to try to go behind his back, but Gosheven catches

X! Meanwhile, after the Enterprise finds the Sheliak colony ship, Picard and Troi 
X! beam over to try to reason with the Sheliak, only to fail utterly.

X! It now appears that they are rapidly replicating and essentially eating the

X! What's more, the nanites have evolved to the point where they have become, in
X! effect, a civilization capable of intelligent thought.
X! When Picard refuses to destroy them,
X! Stubbs fears that his life's work will be ruined and attempts to kill them.
X! In retaliation, the nanites attack Stubbs and render the ship powerless.

X! Desperate to stop the nanites, Picard asks Data to find a way to communicate
X! with them.
X! The robots, distrustful of humans, refuse to agree to a cease fire.
X! As a gesture of good faith, Data allows the nanites to enter his circuits and
X! manipulate his verbal programs, thus using him as a conduit for face-to-face
X! communication.

X! ``Speaking'' through Data, the nanites reveal that they meant no harm,
X! but needed to explore the computer system.
X! After Stubbs apologizes for trying to kill them and arranges a new home for
X! them on Planet Kavis Alpha Four, the nanites relent and even help reconstruct
X! the computer core in time for Stubbs to complete his experiment.

X! but then the sensors indicate a Borg ship

X! The ship then vanishes, and all the computer can do is talk chess.
X! Picard calls Riker and Data to his ready room
X! to discuss the fate of this mission.

X! Stubbs intrudes on the meeting and objects strenuously to any suggestion of 
X! leaving, claiming he would rather die than leave.
X! Wes, having nasty suspicions,
X! checks his lab and realizes the problem is probably all his fault.
X! He talks to Guinan about it,
X! saying he accidentally let two \f2Nanites\f1 (tiny robots designed to
X! work in living cells) escape in tandem, and they may be responsible.
X! After several more problems with the ship, Beverly confronts Wesley in his lab, 
X! hinting that perhaps he's taken on more than he can handle.
X! Wes argues with her, saying ``how can you know?
X! You haven't even been here!'',
X! and the two decide to work together on the problem.
X! They find the problem is worse than they thought: the Nanites are evolving,
X! and are now working with a collective intelligence.

X! Stubbs, caring only for his experiment, tries to kill the Nanites with gamma
X! radiation, but only manages to kill some, angering the Nanites, who then try
X! to kill him later.
X! Picard, grudgingly, agrees that the time has come to kill
X! them all for the sake of the ship, but as he's about to, Data's attempts at
X! communication succeed.
X! 
X! Data offers the Nanites his body as a conduit for face-to-face contact,
X! and they accept.
X! Stubbs apologizes for his actions,
X! and throws himself on the mercy of the creatures.
X! They agree to end the conflict,
X! and say the ship has gotten too small for their needs.
X! Picard relocates them to a nearby planet,
X! and Stubbs's experiment goes as planned.
X! Finally, Bev notices Wesley come into Ten-Forward
X! with a girl while she talks to Guinan, and while happy to see him

X! Though Kevin angrily insists that he and his wife do not require the crew's

X! A short time later, the warship reappears and obliterates the Uxbridges' home.
X! In response, the Enterprise destroys the warship.
X! Despite the fact that the crew can find no signs of life on Rana IV,

X! Unfortunately, when the aggressive species known as the Husnock attacked Rana
X! IV, Kevin refused to fight back or kill anyone.
X! However, his wife joined the battle and was murdered by the Husnock,

X! instant of grief, destroyed the Husnock race of 50 billion.

X! They meet the two survivors, Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge,
X! and although Kevin is taciturn and unfriendly,
X! Rishon invites everyone in for tea.
X! After Data finds their music box, Troi, who earlier sensed 
X! something ``strange'' about these two, hears the music in her mind,
X! growing ever louder.
X! 
X! After finding nothing odd about the house that would keep it spared, Riker
X! asks the Uxbridges to come back to the Enterprise, but they refuse, saying they
X! can take care of themselves.
X! At a conference a short time later, Troi leaves in pain from the music.
X! When Picard asks her about it later, she mentions that the
X! music began when she started thinking about Kevin and Rishon.
X! Suddenly, the ship that Kevin described as attacking the planet
X! returns and attacks.
X! Its weapons, however, are no match for the Enterprise,
X! and they quickly run off the attacker and give chase.
X! They find they cannot catch up to it, however, and return to the planet,
X! where Picard beams down to talk to the two survivors.
X! 
X! He finds that Kevin has sworn never to kill, but Kevin insists that the aliens
X! who killed them could not have known he didn't fight with the others.
X! Picard asks them again to come with him, but they refuse,
X! and Kevin suggests that the Enterprise leaves the system.
X! Picard returns, and as Troi's condition worsens,
X! the enemy ship returns, looking much nastier.
X! It severely damages the Enterprise,
X! and forces it to temporarily flee the system.
X! Picard becomes suspicious that the ship somehow responds to Kevin
X! and Rishon's wishes, and tests his theory by beaming down once more and
X! telling Kevin that ``the 
X! Enterprise will remain in orbit for as long as the two of you are alive.''
X! When he returns, so does the ship,
X! but Picard orders that it not be interfered with. 
X! The ship destroys the Uxbridge home, leaving no survivors, and is then destroyed
X! itself by a single photon torpedo from the Enterprise.
X! Despite there now being no reason to stay,
X! Picard orders Worf and Geordi to monitor the surface.
X! 
X! Three hours later, just as Picard's finished telling Riker that if he's right,
X! the massacre on Rana had only \f2one\f1 survivor,
X! the house mysteriously returns, with two life-form readings.
X! Picard beams them both aboard and claims Kevin is
X! responsible for Troi's suffering, and the warship.
X! He tells Rishon that she is merely a re-creation of Kevin's, and she vanishes.
X! Kevin heals Troi, then tells Picard the truth of what happened: he is a Douwd,
X! a being which spends its life in disguises.
X! He refused to fight when the Husnock attacked, but Rishon went to
X! fight and was killed.
X! He says that her death drove him insane, and in his rage,
X! he destroyed the entire Husnockk species.
X! Picard, taken aback, says ``we have no law to fit your crime'',
X! and allows Kevin to return to Rana.

X! Despite the fact that Crusher performs a procedure to remove his short term
X! memory, it doesn't work and Liko returns to the planet describing

X! and reversing death.

X! To find Palmer and minimize any cultural contamination, Riker and Troi beam
X! down to the planet disguised as Mintakans.
X! They overhear Liko telling his friends about ``the Picard's'' powers and are
X! shocked when three Mintakan hunters walk in carrying Palmer.
X! Liko immediately assumes that Palmer is a servant of ``the Picard'' and it
X! would please the god if they presented Palmer to him.

X! While Troi diverts the Mintakans,
X! Riker beams himself and Palmer up to the Enterprise.
X! When Liko and the group realize what Riker has done,
X! they fear that ``the Picard'' will be angry with them for losing Palmer.

X! prove their loyalty to ``the Picard.''

X! Fearing for Troi's life, Picard has Nuria, the Mintakan leader, beamed
X! aboard the Enterprise, hoping that is she is convinced that he is not a god,

X! mortal \- until she sees him standing by helplessly in Sickbay when Warren
X! dies and she realizes Picard has no power over life and death.
