Then, unexpectedly, Worf passes out. X! Pulaski tells Worf that she's found he has the Klingon equivalent to measles, X! but tells Picard something else, to save Worf's reputation. X! .sp .5v X! Data suggests to Picard that he look for a manifest of whatever's on that ship, X! and he then finds a record of the S.S.Mariposa, carrying a strange mixture of X! technology and back-to-nature supplies. When the emissary arrives (in a Class-8 probe, of all things, X! so as to arrive quickly), the crew revives K'Ehleyr, a half-human, X half-Klingon female. X! As she enters to begin the briefing, she recognizes and greets Worf, X! saying ``so this is where you've been hiding\-I told you we'd meet again.'' X! .sp .5v X! At the briefing, she tells them of a Klingon ship, the T'Ong, which set out on X! a mission with the crew in suspended animation 75 years ago, while the Klingons X! and Federation were still at war, and that the nearest Klingon ship is 48 hours X! behind them, which may be too late. X! Their task is to prevent the crew from awakening, if possible, X! and to destroy the ship, if not. X! Picard, not willing to simply destroy them out of hand, X! puts K'Ehleyr and Worf to work on finding other options. X! Unfortunately, the two don't interact very well. X! K'Ehleyr is anxious to discuss their aborted love affair of six years earlier, X! but Worf is all business. X! He searches for their mission and talks of alternatives, but K'Ehleyr X! says there are no alternatives. X! Eventually, K'Ehleyr storms to her quarters X! and smashes a table in frustration. X! .sp .5v X! Later, on Troi's advice, she goes to exercise on the holodeck, and ends up X! using Worf's violent calisthenics program. X! As she finishes, Worf enters, and X! when provoked, increases the simulation to ``Level Two''. X! Both fight, then have a rather passionate encounter. X! When K'Ehleyr later remarks that Worf always was loath X! to speak what's on his mind, Worf responds by saying ``no X! longer'' and beginning to recite the Klingon oath of marriage. X! X .sp -1v X*************** X*** 1804,1845 **** X .IX Strategema X! A simulated war game suddenly turns into a real-life fight for survival when X! the crew is ambushed by a Ferengi battleship. X! X! As part of the first Starfleet Battle Simulation program, Picard and Riker X! are tapped to compete against each other in a mock battle. X! Picard is given command of the Enterprise, X! while Riker is assigned the Hathaway, a hopelessly unequipped, X! 80-year-old vessel which he's given 48 hours to outfit for battle. X! Acting as an observer of the exercise is Kolrami, X! a master strategist from the Zakdorn race, X! which is reputed to have the greatest strategic minds in the galaxy. X! X! When Riker and his team beam aboard the Hathaway, they are shocked by its X! dilapidated condition. X! Kolrami tells Riker he will be commanding the 80-year-old USS Hathaway, X! and putting her in simulated combat against the Enterprise. X! Riker selects his complement of 40, including Worf, Geordi and Wesley. X! X! Before Riker leaves, he invites Kolrami to play a game of \f2strategema\f1, a X! game at which Kolrami is a grandmaster. X! Kolrami easily defeats Riker (who did X! not expect to win, but merely played for the privilege of playing him), and X! Data goes into seclusion in his quarters, X! and neither Pulaski nor Troi can help him. X! Picard, after yelling at Kolrami for his belittling attitude towards Riker, X! goes to Data's quarters with a no-nonsense attitude and gets Data back X! to the bridge, where the two confer about Riker's probable tactics. X! X! The simulation commences, and Worf prepares his ``surprise'', creating an X! illusory Romulan Warbird for the Enterprise to deal with. X! Impressed, Picard orders the security code changed. X! After a short time later, sensors pick up a Ferengi ship coming in, X! but Picard merely thinks Worf's better than he thought. X! Unfortunately, it's a real Ferengi ship, and it fuses the Enterprise's X! connections to its simulated weaponry, cutting off access to the real ones, X! as well as the transporter circuitry. X! They demand the Hathaway, convinced soemthing valuable is on board. X! X! Kolrami orders a retreat, but Picard dismisses that as unacceptable. X! He confers with Riker, who tells them that the Hathaway now has 2 seconds X! of warp 1 (if the system they patched up holds), X! and the two come up with a plan. X! Using one of photon torpedoes they've managed to gain access to, the X! Enterprise pretends to destroy the Hathaway, which warps away, then frighten X! off the Ferengi by making their sensors show another starship coming in. X! Kolrami is forced to confess Riker's good at what he does, X! then plays a rematch with Data, who humiliates him X! by playing for an eternal draw. After beaming Riker back aboard the Enterprise, X! Dr. Pulaski determines that the thorn contains an unknown organism X! which is rapidly spreading throughout his nervous system. X! If left unchecked, the microbe will soon reach Riker's brain and kill him. X! Ironically, Pulaski has no way of decimation the organism X! without destroying the nerves of the being it's inhabiting. X! X! At first, Riker's affliction seems more of a nuisance than a threat. X! But during a visit with Counselor Troi, X! his vital signs suddenly plummet and Rike loses consciousness. X! Although Dr. Pulaski is able to stabilize his condition, X! she discovers that the organism has spread to Riker's brain. X! In a desperate attempt to keep his brain functioning, X! Pulaski begins electronically stimulating his memory. X! X! Soon, Riker's mind is filled with remembrances of his experiences aboard the X! Enterprise. X! When a memory involving romance increases the growth rate of the X! organism, Pulaski surmises that if positive emotions feed the invader, X! negative emotions could kill it. X! X! Enraged by his wife's death, Kevin then summoned his magical powers and in an X! instant of grief, destroyed the Husnock race of 50 billion. X! Fearful that Troi would discover his secret, X! X! Riker, Bev, Geordi, Data and Worf beam down to investigate. X! They meet the two survivors, Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge, X! and although Kevin is taciturn and unfriendly, X! Rishon invites everyone in for tea. X! After Data finds their music box, Troi, who earlier sensed X! something ``strange'' about these two, hears the music in her mind, X! growing ever louder. X! X! After finding nothing odd about the house that would keep it spared, Riker X! asks the Uxbridges to come back to the Enterprise, but they refuse, saying they X! can take care of themselves. X! At a conference a short time later, Troi leaves in pain from the music. X! When Picard asks her about it later, she mentions that the X! music began when she started thinking about Kevin and Rishon. X! Suddenly, the ship that Kevin described as attacking the planet X! returns and attacks. X! Its weapons, however, are no match for the Enterprise, X! and they quickly run off the attacker and give chase. X! They find they cannot catch up to it, however, and return to the planet, X! where Picard beams down to talk to the two survivors. X! X! He finds that Kevin has sworn never to kill, but Kevin insists that the aliens X! who killed them could not have known he didn't fight with the others. X! Picard asks them again to come with him, but they refuse, X! and Kevin suggests that the Enterprise leaves the system. X! Picard returns, and as Troi's condition worsens, X! the enemy ship returns, looking much nastier. X! It severely damages the Enterprise, X! and forces it to temporarily flee the system. X! Picard becomes suspicious that the ship somehow responds to Kevin X! and Rishon's wishes, and tests his theory by beaming down once more and X! telling Kevin that ``the X! Enterprise will remain in orbit for as long as the two of you are alive.'' X! When he returns, so does the ship, X! but Picard orders that it not be interfered with. X! The ship destroys the Uxbridge home, leaving no survivors, and is then destroyed X! itself by a single photon torpedo from the Enterprise. X! Despite there now being no reason to stay, X! Picard orders Worf and Geordi to monitor the surface. X! X! Three hours later, just as Picard's finished telling Riker that if he's right, X! the massacre on Rana had only \f2one\f1 survivor, X! the house mysteriously returns, with two life-form readings. X! X! .sp .5v X! To find Palmer and minimize any cultural contamination, Riker and Troi beam X! down to the planet disguised as Mintakans. X! They overhear Liko telling his friends about ``the Picard's'' powers and are X! shocked when three Mintakan hunters walk in carrying Palmer. X! Liko immediately assumes that Palmer is a servant of ``the Picard'' and it X! would please the god if they presented Palmer to him. X! .sp .5v X! While Troi diverts the Mintakans, X! Riker beams himself and Palmer up to the Enterprise. X! When Liko and the group realize what Riker has done, X! they fear that ``the Picard'' will be angry with them for losing Palmer. X!
