X! members, driving one of them out of the cavern, and most importantly,
X! removing the hologram covering the entrance.

X! As the team beams down to attend to the injured and fix the reactor, a father
X! and daughter, Liko and Oji, notice the cave while en route to read the sundial.
X! Liko climbs up and sees the crew, but is then startled and falls,
X! breaking his back.
X! Beverly, not willing to let him die from injuries they caused,
X! beams up to sickbay with him.
X! Picard growls a bit at this, and orders Bev to erase his short-term memory.
X! Liko, however, awakes long enough to hear Picard order the search for
X! Dr. Palmer continued, and his body chemistry prevents the erasure from working.
X! He tells Oji of his journey to a remarkable place, and believes 
X! that Picard is their old legend of ``the Overseer'', a god.
X! 
X! When sensors prove useless to locate Palmer, Riker and Troi, surgically altered
X! to resemble Mintakans, beam down.
X! They hear Liko's talk and inform Picard of the situation,
X! who is understandably distressed.
X! Matters are made worse when
X! the Mintakans find Palmer and decide to hold him for ``the Picard''.
X! One of the researchers, Dr. Barron,
X! insists that Palmer be immediately beamed up, but Picard refuses.
X! Then, while Troi lures the Mintakans away,
X! Riker frees Palmer and gets him to the Enterprise.
X! Unfortunately, Troi is then held captive to
X! assure ``the Picard'' that the Mintakans were not responsible.
X! Barron recommends that Picard beam down,
X! pretending to be their god, and give them a set of guidelines,
X! but Picard refuses,
X! saying to do so violates ``the very \f2essence\f1 of the Prime Directive.''
X! When it's theorized that if they can convince Nuria,
X! the tribe's leader, of Picard's humanity, she can convince the others, 
X! Picard decides to beam her aboard to ``show her how the magic works.''

X! Before long, he manages to convince Nuria to overcome her awe, and even
X! convinces her intellectually that he is not a god, but merely further advanced.
X! However, she does not believe emotionally until she sees the third researcher,
X! Dr. Warren, die, and realizes that Picard is not the master of life and death.
X! She and Picard return just as Liko, filled with religious fervor,
X! is about to kill Troi.
X! When Picard arrives, Liko worships him and asks him to bring back Liko's wife.
X! When Picard says he cannot, Liko insists he can,
X! and threatens to prove he is the Overseer by shooting him with a bow.

X! as the confused boy rushes to the warmth of his ``mother's'' arms.

X! Determining that an energy beam from the planet is powering the image of Aster,
X! Picard orders the crew to sever it.
X! Undaunted, the energy field then gathers into a glowing mass,
X! enters the ship and tries to gain control of the transporter room,
X! while Jeremy and his mother hurry toward it to make their escape.

X! When the alien Aster is trapped in the Enterprise's forcefield,
X! she confesses that she is part of a lifeform that survived the Koinonian Wars.

X! Troi leads Jeremy back to his quarters, only to find they now exactly resemble
X! his house on Earth, and that his ``mother'' is there again.
X! Though Troi tries to convince Jeremy that none of this is real,
X! he is enthralled, and stays with Mom.
X! Picard manages to keep the pair from going much further than their quarters,
X! and the alien quickly explains herself.

X! There were apparently once two races on the planet below\-the Koinonians,
X! made of matter; and her race, made of energy.

X! During a centuries old battle between the Menthars and Promellians,
X! the Menthars had used the assimilators to ensnare their enemy in the booby trap.
X! The Promellians, in trying to escape, unknowingly supplied the power for their
X! own destruction.

X! Meanwhile, Geordi tells Picard that their only hope for survival requires
X! turning command of the starship over to the computer.
X! But while running simulations of the maneuver,
X! Geordi discovers that the radiation force striking the ship has
X! reached fatal levels.

X! With time running out, Geordi abandons the idea of overpowering the booby trap.
X! Instead he gives the Enterprise all of the power it can muster in one quick
X! blast and then immediately shuts down all non-essential power,
X! allowing the ship to break the inertia and free itself from the trap.

X! Picard, taking control of the Enterprise, maneuvers it out of further danger
X! by using the gravitational pull of an asteroid to slingshot his vessel out
X! of the battle zone.

X! to investigate, Picard finds a 1000-year-old Promelian battle cruiser.
X! He pulls Captain's prerogative to check the ship out, and he explores it,
X! enchanted by the history,
X! while Guinan tells Geordi that he shouldn't try so hard.

X! Picard finds the ship's log, where the captain takes full responsibility for
X! what befell them, whatever that may have been.
X! After he beams back, they decide to leave, only to find that they cannot.
X! Further, they start losing energy
X! reserves, and are suddenly bombarded by high-energy radiation.
X! Geordi starts working on making the Enterprise move,
X! and while considering the way to exploit 
X! the small time difference between reaction and counterreaction, calls up voice
X! logs of Leah Brahms, one of the ship's designers, then goes to the holodeck
X! to call up prototype images of the ship, where he accidentally triggers a
X! holographic simulation of Dr. Brahms.
X! 
X! She seems informative, but emotionless, and Geordi combines her psychological
X! profile with other information to create a more ``real'' simulation.
X! While the two of them get down to work,
X! Picard examines logs brought back by Riker and his team from the cruiser.
X! In one, the captain mentions \f2aceton assimilators\f1,
X! which drain power from the Enterprise and convert it to the radiation.
X! Picard finds one small weakness in the field and fires at it,
X! only to have that section strengthen from the phaser energy.
X! 
X! With only minutes remaining until shields go down, admitting the radiation,
X! Geordi and Leah realize that the only way to exploit the time difference is to
X! make hundreds of adjustments per second, which would require handing control of
X! the ship entirely over to the computer, a move with which Picard is not happy.
X! In simulations, that might work, but is only a fifty-fifty chance, and Geordi
X! asks for two more minutes, as shields go down (leaving 26 minutes until they all
X! die from the radiation).
X! 
X! Geordi gets another idea, and suggests to Picard to go the opposite route: put 
X! in one quick blast of the impulse engines, then shut everything down except
X! for life support and two thrusters, and essentially fly the ship out on manual.
X! This Picard does, slingshotting around one large asteroid to gain the final
X! momentum burst they need.
X! They blow up the Promelian ship, taking the booby trap with it, and Geordi
X! gives ``Leah'' a kiss goodbye before closing down the holodeck program.

X! Dr. Crusher's examination of Patahk soon reveals neural degeneration caused
X! by exposure to the planet's magnetic fields,
X! which increases the crew's concern for Geordi.
X! Tensions rise when the Enterprise learns that a Romulan
X! warship intends to cross the Neutral Zone and enter restricted Federation
X! territory to rescue any crash survivors.
X! When Picard informs the Romulan captain,
X! Tomalak, that Patahk is aboard his ship,
X! Tomalak insists that the two ships rendezvous and that Patahk be returned.
X! 
X! Meanwhile, the crew launches a signal probe to locate Geordi.
X! As he frees himself from the pit and makes his way toward the beacon,
X! Geordi is ambushed and taken prisoner by Bochra,
X! a second survivor of the Romulan crash.
X! Before long, however, the electrical storms on Galorndon wreak havoc on
X! Bochra's nervous system and render Geordi's visor inoperable,
X! temporarily blinding him.
X! Geordi is able to convince the critically ill Romulan that their only hope for
X! survival is to beam aboard the Enterprise, and the two enemies join forces to
X! locate the beacon.

X! Back on the starship, Dr. Crusher informs Worf that a transfusion of his
X! ribosomes is the only hope for Patahk's survival.
X! But the Klingon officer refuses
X! to help because his parents were killed by Romulans years earlier.
X! Although Picard explains the drastic political implications of a Romulan
X! dying in Federation hands, Worf stands firm.
X! When Patahk dies, Tomalak prepares to retaliate by attacking the Enterprise.
X! Tomalak's actions force Picard to raise his ship's shields,
X! preventing transporting activity, just as a window in the storm appears.

X! With time running out, Picard informs Tomalak that the Enterprise is lowering
X! its shields to beam Geordi and a Romulan officer aboard.
X! Knowing that an aggresive response could lead to an all-out war between
X! the Federation and Romulans, Tomalak allows Picard to proceed.

X! cannot contact the others, or make it back to the beam-down point.
X! Riker and Worf beam up, with the Romulan, but without Geordi.
X! Geordi manages to make some makeshift pitons and climbs out of the pit.

X! Meanwhile, Bev is having trouble treating the Romulan, due to cell damage from 
X! the intense magnetic fields down on the planet, and starts looking for a 
X! possible compatible ribosome donor.
X! While Wesley begins working on a neutrino-pulse beacon to send down
X! (since Geordi could see it, and the signal could make 
X! it back through the storms to the Enterprise), the Enterprise intercepts a 
X! signal from Commander Tomalak on a Romulan Warbird, saying he is on his way.
X! 
X! Picard hails Tomalak and warns him not to cross into Federation space.
X! When Tomalak hears they are holding his officer,
X! he demands an immediate rendezvous for his return.
X! Meanwhile, Geordi sees the beacon and moves towards it,
X! only to be knocked out and taken prisoner by a second Romulan.
X! 
X! While Geordi tries to convince Bochra that their only hope is to work together,
X! Bev tells Worf that he is the only possible donor to save Patakh.
X! Worf, filled with rage at the Romulans, refuses absolutely to donate,
X! despite Picard's request (though Picard does not order him to do so).
X! When Tomalak comes close enough to the edge of the Zone to see that the
X! Enterprise is not there, he 
X! hails, angered, and becomes angrier still when he hears his officer is dying.
X! 
X! Eventually, Geordi manages to convince Bochra that they can work together or die
X! together, and they start towards the beacon, but then Geordi finds that he can 
X! no longer interface with the VISOR.
X! Bochra suggests linking the VISOR to the tricorder and using the combination
X! as a pointer, and offers to be Geordi's eyes.
X! Meanwhile, Picard receives word that Tomalak's ship has crossed into 
X! Federation space, and orders red alert.
X! Then, as if that weren't enough, Bev calls him to say that Patakh has died.
X! 
X! Geordi and Bochra reach the beacon just as Tomalak reaches Galorndon Core.
X! When Tomalak hears that Patakh has died, he snarls that he will only be the
X! first, and powers up disruptors.
X! Suddenly, the window opens, and they find
X! evidence that Geordi is down there, with a second Romulan.
X! Picard tells Tomalak the news,
X! and makes the first ``gesture of trust'' by lowering his shields to beam up
X! Geordi and Bochra, and Bochra assures Tomalak that he has not been mistreated.
X! Tomalak powers down his disruptors, and the Enterprise returns
X! Bochra to the Warbird and escorts it back to the Neutral Zone.

X! In his place, Picard selects Riker to represent Federation interests.

X! Concerned that there is little information about the coveted wormhole,
X! Riker suggests that the Enterprise conducts an expedition into it
X! before committing the Federation to a binding contract.
X! Picard agrees and orders Geordi and Data to pilot a shuttlecraft into the hole.
X! Not to be outdone by the Federation,
X! the Ferengi send a craft of their own into the hole.
X! 
X! Before long, however, Geordi and Data determine that the wormhole is not as
X! stable or as valuable as it looks.
X! They inform the Ferengi shuttlecraft pilots
X! of their discovery but the Ferengi ignore them.
X! Back on the Enterprise, negotiations for the hole continue,
X! as does the romance between Troi and Devinoni.
X! Although she's fallen in love with Devinoni,
X! Troi begins to have some reservations about him when she learns that he
X! is part Betazoid and has been using
X! his empathic powers to manipulate his competitors in the negotiations.
X! 
X! Masterfully maneuvering his position,
X! Devinoni narrows the competition down to the Federaton and the Chrysalians,
X! whom he represents.
X! Just when it appears that Riker will secure the wormhole rights,
X! the Ferengi threaten to destroy the hole,
X! insisting that an ``informed source'' has told them that the Federation
X! has made a secret deal with the Barzan premier.
X! 
X! Devinoni takes advantage of the conflict and the Barzan leader's wishes for
X! peace to win the rights to the hole.
X! When Troi senses that Devinoni staged the
X! entire incident to undermine the Federation,
X! her sense of duty compels her to speak out.
X! But before the Barzan premier has a chance to revoke the agreement
X! with Devinoni, the Enterprise shuttle appears from the wormhole and
X! announces that it is worthless.
X! The dashing delegate then bids farewell to

X! Meanwhile, Picard, concerned that the 
X! wormhole may not in fact be completely stable, orders a full sensor analysis.
X! That night, as Deanna and Ral end up missing dinner for other, more...amorous
X! pursuits, DaiMon Goss poisons Mendoza with a nasty, but non-fatal illness.
X! As Picard is playing host, he cannot take Mendoza's place in the negotiations,
X! and puts Riker in charge instead.
X! 
X! After the sensor readings are complete, Picard decides to send Geordi and Data
X! in a shuttle through the hole to investigate the other side, and when the
X! Ferengi object, allows them to go through in their own shuttle as well, while
X! Ral emphasizes the Chrysalians' political neutrality to Bhavani.
X! Later, in bed,
X! Troi finds out that Ral is one-quarter Betazoid, and is also empathic.
X! While the shuttles emerge and find they are about 200 light-years from where
X! they thought they'd end up,
X! Ral plays upon the ``scholarly'' nature of the Caldonians
X! to convince Leor to withdraw Caldonia's bid and throw it behind the Chrysalians.
X! When Troi takes Ral to task for hiding his ``edge'' and using it unethically,
X! he counters by saying she does precisely the same thing in crisis situations, 
X! and when she does it, it's a life-or-death situation.
X! Meanwhile, Data and Geordi, fearing the hole will soon collapse,
X! try to convince the Ferengi to come back with them, but to no avail.
X! As they leave, the far side of the hole moves, stranding the Ferengi.
X! 
X! Suddenly, Goss, claiming the Barzan have already signed a secret agreement with 
X! the Federation, fires a missile at the wormhole, which the Enterprise destroys.
X! As Ral points out to Bhavani that the wormhole is merely being used as a pawn 
X! here, Troi tells Picard Goss is bluffing.
X! Ral comes onto the bridge a moment later and ``talks'' Goss out of destroying
X! the wormhole, telling him that the 
X! Chrysalians have obtained it and are prepared to offer the Ferengi free passage.
X! After Bhavani apologizes to Riker for making him find out this way, Troi exposes
X! Ral as an empath, and says he and Goss were performing a scene staged for their 
X! own purposes.
X! Then, however, the shuttle returns and reports the hole worthless, leaving Ral
X! to pay up his side of a bargain that will now net the Chrysalians nothing.
X! Ral says goodbye to Troi, and says he is happy he's been exposed\-now,
X! he thinks, he may be able to change his way of life.

X! The Enterprise sets course for Acamar Three, where one hundred years ago,
X! before the Gatherers broke off,
X! the Acamarians were consumed with clan wars \- bloody,
X! vengeful feuds that lasted for generations.
X! Since then, with the exception of the Gatherers,
X! the Acamarians have been living in peace and order.
X! Marouk, Sovereign of Acamar, agrees to reconcile with the Gatherers in the
X! hopes of convincing them to return to Acamar and ending their raids.
X! Included in Marouk's entourage is her cook, Yuta,
X! for whom Riker develops an affection.

X! Marouk directs the Enterprise to a Gatherer encampment in the Harami[?] cluster.
X! On arrival, the away team beams down,
X! only to be ambushed by a band of Gatherers,
X! but Riker devises a smoke screen, and the ruffians are surrounded.
X! Marouk beams down for the talks, and, in spite of the Gatherers' rough behavior,
X! their leader, Brull,
X! eventually agrees with proposals put forth by Marouk and Picard.
X! He insists on presenting the proposal to his leader, Chorgan,
X! whose ship is in the Harami cluster.
X! The meeting is disrupted by the discovery of a dead Gatherer,
X! who we know was killed by Yuta.
X! Dr. Crusher runs tests on the body,
X! and in reviewing the results she discovers that his heart attack was caused
X! by a rare microvirus \- with the unusual aspect of attaching itself only to
X! very specific DNA, thus suggesting it was engineered for murder.
X! 
X! As the Enterprise approaches Chorgan's ship, it is met with hostility,
X! and Picard immediately knocks out Chorgan's shields, forcing him to talk.
X! Picard, Marouk, and their parties beam over to Chorgan's ship,
X! and the negotiations progress.
X! Meanwhile, Riker, Data, and Dr. Crusher pore over the Acamarian data bases,
X! and they arrive at a solution to the mysterious microvirus:
X! that Yuta is the only survivor of the Clan Tralesta and that she is taking
X! revenge on the Clan Lornack, of which Chorgan is the last surviving member.

X! Riker beams over to the talks just in time to prevent Yuta from murdering
X! Chorgan, but to do so he is forced to kill her, much to his own regret.
X! Later, we learn that the Gatherers have agreed to a truce.

X! her chef, whom Riker immediately takes an interest in.

X! Upon arriving at Gamma Hirami Two, a Gatherer outpost, Riker leads an away team
X! down to the surface.
X! After repelling an ambush, Riker eventually manages to
X! get Brull, the leader of this group of Gatherers, to talk to Marouk.
X! Marouk tells them the Clan Wars of decades before are over,
X! and invites them home.
X! Brull demands a private talk with Marouk and Picard, and while everyone's
X! separated, Yuta touches Volnath, a Gatherer of the Lornack clan, killing him
X! in seconds.

X! After Brull announces that he will allow Marouk to take her offer to Chorgan, 
X! the Gatherer leader, Volnath's body is found, and Beverly can't find a cause
X! of death (it was a heart attack, but with no \f2reason\f1).
X! While Marouk discusses clans (to which loyalty was once absolute) with Picard,
X! and Brull talks to Wes about wanting something better for his children,
X! Riker tries to romance Yuta.
X! After she leaves for a time to attend the Sovereign, Bev informs
X! Riker that she's discovered a ``microvirus'' was responsible\-one tuned 
X! specifically to a certain DNA sequence found in only one out of every million
X! people, and they conclude Volnath was murdered.

X! Later, Yuta comes to Riker's quarters and offers him pleasure, but claims she
X! can never feel pleasure or passion herself.
X! (Riker declines, saying he doesn't want a servant, but a lover.)
X! Then, after subduing Chorgan's ship, Picard and
X! Marouk beam over by force with Brull, and negotiations begin.
X! Bev finds the only other recorded victim of this microvirus,
X! and discovers both victims were of the Lornack clan.
X! Then, Data discovers evidence of the Lornack-Tralestas
X! feud (Tralestas being the clan to which Yuta belongs), and discovers Yuta in a 
X! visual record from over 50 years ago, looking exactly as she does now.

X! Negotiations on Chorgan's ship take a quick break, and Yuta comes to offer
X! brandy, particularly to Chorgan, the last remaining Lornack alive.
X! Riker beams over and orders her away,
X! and we discover that she was altered after the massacre of nearly all the
X! Tralestas to be a carrier of this virus, bred only for vengeance.
X! When she proves resistant to phaser stun, Riker finds himself 
X! forced to disintegrate her.
X! The negotiations lead to a successful truce, and 
X! Picard consoles Riker in Ten-Forward about his loss.

X! The Romulan defector claims to be Setal, a low-ranking logistics clerk,
X! who brings information about a secret Romulan offensive:
X! the new Romulan leaders are building a base on Nelvana III in the Neutral Zone,
X! operable in forty-eight hours,

X! distance of fifteen Federation sectors.
X! He recommends that the base be destroyed to avert the threat of full-scale war.

X! The first indication is that Setal is a spy:
X! sensors detect no activity in the Nelvana system;
X! the Romulans have a history of baiting their enemies into the first attack;
X! the scout ship auto-destructs before it can be analyzed;
X! and analysis of the recent Romulan exchange suggests that the
X! Warbird wanted the scout ship to be captured.
X! New information confuses the issue even further:
X! 1) a maximum scan probe detects low-level subspace radio emissions and
X! ionization disturbances \- effects that could be produced by cloaked Romulan
X! ships, and 2) previously uncommunicative,
X! the defector reveals his true identity as Admiral Jarok.
X! Jarok confesses that when he disagreed with the new leadership's plans for war,
X! he was censured and sent to command a distant sector.
X! His only recourse to save the future for his daughter and other children was
X! to ``turn traitor.''
X! Picard demands proof, and Jarok reveals the locations, strengths,
X! and tactical plans of the Romulan fleet.
X! Armed with this information, the Enterprise sets course for Nelvana III.

X! As they approach the planet, the Enterprise is surprised to find no Romulan
X! encounter, and no signs of activity, past or present, on the planet.
X! When Jarok is brought to the bridge, he is genuinely surprised as well,
X! and Picard realizes the awful truth \- the Romulan leaders have been feeding
X! Jarok disinformation, and while testing his loyalty they have drawn the
X! Enterprise into a trap.
X! Two Warbirds uncloak and attack, Commander Tomalak accuses the Enterprise of
X! violating the Neutral Zone, and he demands surrender.
X! Instead, Picard responds with a reference to \f2Henry V\f1,
X! `If the cause is just and honorable, they are prepared to give their lives.'
X! Picard then asks, ``Are you prepared to die today, Tomalak?''
X! At this moment two Klingon warships, apparently arranged by Picard,
X! uncloak themselves, armed and ready.
X! Aware that he has been outwitted this time, Tomalak chooses to retreat.

X! Picard orders the Enterprise shields extended around it,
X! and is then surprised to see the Warbird head back
X! into the Neutral Zone without an argument.
X! They take the ship in tow and beam over the defector, Sub-Lt. Setal,
X! who claims to have vital information about a new Romulan offensive,
X! and wants to stop a war before it starts.

X! Everyone is understandably skeptical of both Setal's claims and his status as a 
X! defector, particularly when faced with evidence such as his scoutship
X! self-destructing.
X! Data scans the Nelvana system (Setal claims there's a base on 
X! Nelvana 3, in the Zone), and finds nothing.
X! Picard, after receiving a message 
X! from Starfleet Command saying it's his decision, calls in Worf.
X! Later, as the ship reaches the closest point to Nelvana 3 that's still in
X! Federation space, Data launches a Class-1 probe.

X! While Picard asks Worf to take a communication from a Klingon ship, Setal's
X! interrogation proceeds, ending with Riker convinced Setal's simply a spy.
X! Then, after the probe finds unusual subspace emissions in the area,

X! He sadly says his home is now denied him, then tells Data to arrange

X! and demands proof again.
X! Jaroc, beaten, gives all the information he can, including the location of
X! the Romulan fleet and information about cloaking technology.

X! At the Zone border, Riker is uneasy to find no ``greeting party'', and becomes
X! still more uneasy when the ship reaches Nelvana 3 and finds absolutely nothing.

X! As they try to withdraw, they are caught by two Warbirds, led by Commander
X! Tomalak, who gloatingly addresses Picard as the aggressor and demands surrender.

X! The chase seems commonplace, but then the prisoner manages,
X! at least temporarily, to escape, surprising all concerned.
X! Nayrok tells them the prisoner is Roga Danar, who is given to bouts
X! of excessive violence.
X! Eventually, the ship is caught and Danar beamed aboard.
X! 
X! However, the security in the transporter room proves ineffective, and it takes
X! quite some time to subdue Danar, though eventually they manage it.
X! Later, Troi senses Danar is in pain and visits the brig to check on him,
X! and is surprised to find he's not at all violent, and seems very bright.
X! She checks Angosian records, and finds he's not a criminal, but a \f3soldier\f1.
X! Eventually, she finds the whole story and tells Picard.
X! 
X! Apparently, for the recent Tarsian Wars, the Angosian soldiers were given 
X! various augmentations to survive, both physical and mental (including shielding
X! electrical impulses, rendering them sensor-invisible).
X! Danar and his friends were put on Lunar Five because they could not assimilate
X! back into society after returning from the war, and the process,
X! it seems, is irreversible.
X! Picard asks Nayrok about Danar,
X! only to be told that he is treading on matters of ``internal security''.
X! Picard sympathizes with Danar, but still is forced to
X! turn him over to the Angosian transport ship that just arrived.
X! Unfortunately, as he tries,
X! Danar manages to break out of the transporter beam and is loose on
X! the Enterprise, with a phaser.
X! 
X! Despite many attempts, Danar eventually manages to escape.
X! He beams himself over to the transport ship and commandeers it,
X! leaving the Enterprise sensor-inoperative for the time being.
X! Later, Nayrok calls in a panic: Danar has
X! attacked Lunar Five and freed the prisoners,
X! and they are heading for the capital.
X! Picard beams down, with Troi, Data, and Worf, but claims they are not there to
X! fight Angosia's wars for them.
X! Just after Nayrok claims the ``will of the people'' made it necessary to
X! resettle the soldiers, Danar and company arrive, armed to the teeth.
X! Picard orders no response, reasoning that since the 
X! soldiers have been programmed to react violently only when threatened, if they
X! are not threatened, they are not a threat either.
X! When Danar insists that they all only want to come home,
X! and refuses to return even temporarily to Lunar Five,
X! Nayrok begs Picard to call his ship.
X! Picard does so, claiming that since this
X! is a matter of ``internal security'', it's not his concern, and the Enterprise
X! leaves, convinced that if the government of Angosia survives the night, it will

X! terrorist attack, Picard grudgingly allows it, but then, an Ansata appears 
X! (literally out of thin air) and grabs Bev\-then, they both vanish.

X! While Finn, the leader of the Ansata, tries to befriend Bev, Picard puts Wesley
X! on the team trying to figure out how the Ansata are traveling, and Riker visits
X! with Alexana Devos, Rutian chief of police.
X! Devos says she is willing to help,
X! but dismisses the Ansata as ``animals'' and seems not at all optimistic.
X! 
X! Finn eventually gets Bev talking, and tells her the Ansata need a doctor, then
X! accuses the Federation of helping the Rutians by bringing the medical supplies.
X! When she says she needs supplies, Finn produces the ones she brought for the
X! other side.
X! While Riker continues working with Devos and sees evidence of hate
X! on both sides of the issue, Bev discovers that the Ansata's DNA are warping, and
X! she can't help them without first finding what's causing the damage.
X! Finn tells her it's the Inverter,
X! a new invention that allows them to travel via a 
X! dimensional shift, but ``asks a price in return''.
X! Bev discovers Finn has it as well, but he dismisses it,
X! claiming that if he dies, he'll merely be a martyr for the cause.
X! As Finn tells Bev that they are fighting a war for independence,
X! as noble as any other, Wes and company figure out how the Ansata are moving,
X! but find it will take several more jumps to pinpoint their power source.
X! 
X! When Riker talks to a captured Ansata and tells him he wants a meeting with
X! Finn, Finn takes it the wrong way, seeing the mass arrests as the Federation
X! coming down harder on the other side, and decides to blow up the Enterprise.
X! They nearly succeed, but are thwarted.
X! Then, however, Finn appears on the bridge,
X! and when attacked by Picard, transports back with him.
X! 
X! Picard and Bev talk, first amongst themselves, then with Finn, who tells them he
X! wants Federation involvement, saying he'll look even better against a more
X! powerful enemy, and that making the Federation sit in on the bargaining will get
X! him concessions.
X! He transports up one more time to the Enterprise to give his 
X! demands, then leaves\-but now, the power source has been found, and Riker beams 
X! down with Devos, Worf, and a security team.

X! The team manages to knock out the power, and as the Ansata are rounded up,
X! start searching for Picard.
X! Riker finds them,
X! and Devos shoots Finn just as he raises his weapon to shoot Picard.
X! After a small child threatens them and is talked 
X! down by Bev, Riker responds to Devos's claim that ``it never ends'' by pointing 
X! out that ``maybe the end begins with one boy putting down his gun.''
