X! bright probe appears out of nowhere, and settles on the sleeping Q.

X! When Picard asks Q what happened, Q is too concerned about human frailties such 
X! as sleep, and says he needs guidance for being human, and offers his experience
X! and knowledge with moons to assist.
X! Picard assigns Data to Q, and the two go to
X! Engineering, after Data observes that Q has ``achieved in disgrace what I have
X! always aspired to be.''
X! 
X! Q tries to help, but only suggests impossible things like changing the 
X! gravitational constant of the universe.
X! Geordi jumps on that idea as nonsense, 
X! but then considers doing its equivalent by tossing a low-level warpfield around 
X! the moon, changing its effective mass.
X! Q, hungry, goes to Ten-Forward and 
X! encounters Guinan.
X! When Guinan hears that the crew is not convinced Q is human,
X! she stabs him with a fork to see if he can bleed, then tells him he should get 
X! used to begging for help.
X! Suddenly, a plasma cloud shows up and tries to 
X! communicate, then sends a probe in which seizes Q.
X! When shields are 
X! strengthened, the probe leaves, leaving Q free, but scared out of his wits.
X! 
X! Q tells them this cloud is part of the Calamarian, a race he once tormented, and
X! that they want revenge.
X! Riker suggests simply turning him over to them, but
X! Data argues for Q, and Q and Data go to Engineering to help Geordi implement his
X! plan.
X! Q tries to take over and is quickly put in his place, then sulkingly 
X! helps out.
X! However, as the process begins, the Calamarian move in and grab Q.
X! Data holds Q safe in Engineering until shields can be put up, but then both fall
X! to the floor, unconscious.
X! When Q finds that Data is now heavily damaged, he
X! begins to feel ashamed.
X! He decides he'd rather not go on, and steals a shuttle,
X! going out to meet the Calamarian.
X! 
X! Picard, claiming ``it's a perfectly good shuttle'', tries to beam the shuttle
X! back, but cannot.
X! On the shuttle, a second Q pops in.
X! He says Q's a lost 
X! cause, but claims Q's selfless act would raise all sorts of questions back in 
X! the Continuum if he then died, and gives Q back his powers.
X! Q literally blows 
X! the Calamarian away, and returns to the Enterprise to celebrate.

X! leaves, but gives Data the parting gift of one really good laugh, and returns

X! explodes, killing Apgar.
X! Then, Chief Investigator Krag of Tanuga Four beams aboard
X! and demands Riker be extradited to face trial for murder.
X! When Picard talks to Krag in private,
X! he finds that the Tanugan justice system operates under the 
X! premise ``guilty until proven innocent''.
X! Unwilling to extradite Riker, Picard says that the incident will be
X! recreated on the Enterprise, via the holodeck.
X! 
X! Eighteen hours later, the holodeck is ready (all the various depositions have
X! been loaded), and the hearing begins.
X! According to Riker's deposition, Apgar was
X! immediately grumpy, but his wife Manua tried to seduce him.
X! As he tried to gently break her away,
X! Apgar found them and jumped to wrong conclusions,
X! later threatening Riker's life.
X! The next morning, Apgar claimed he had a good 
X! explanation for why he needed so much dycosilium, but Riker claimed not to be 
X! interested, and called the Enterprise, ready to beam back.
X! Krag, however, says his researchers have found evidence of a focused
X! energy pulse coming directly from Riker's position\-``clearly'' Riker
X! firing a phaser at the reactor core.
X! 
X! Then, a burst of unknown radiation is detected on the ship and investigated. 
X! Meanwhile, Manua's deposition is shown.
X! According to it, Riker tried to rape her, and punched out Dr. Apgar
X! when he was discovered, then warned Apgar against reporting this.
X! Riker objects, and a short recess is declared, but Troi tells
X! Riker she sensed no deception\-what she said is what she remembers happening.
X! Shortly after that, a second radiation burst occurs, this one in sickbay.
X! 
X! Wes, Geordi and Data find the two bursts occurred 5 hours, 20 minutes, and 3
X! seconds apart, and that the station was destroyed precisely four times that
X! time ago, less a small delay which they can't explain.
X! After the deposition of Apgar's assistant Tayna is heard,
X! giving Apgar's point of view, Krag demands a 
X! decision from Picard, who temporizes for a while longer.
X! Data then finds one phenomenon with the same time interval: the field
X! generator down on the planet.
X! 
X! Picard then realizes what actually happened: Dr. Apgar had already managed to 
X! create Kreeger waves (the source of the radiation bursts), but lied about it 
X! because he wanted, to turn it into a weapon for any number of groups other than
X! the Federation.
X! When Riker arrived, Apgar worried that Starfleet was getting 
X! suspicious, and tried to get them away quickly.
X! When he discovered Riker and 
X! Manua together, that didn't help, and he decided to murder Riker.
X! He set up the converter to deliver an energy beam to fry Riker,
X! but it bounced off the transporter beam and destroyed the reactor.
X! Picard demonstrates this by using the converter created by the holodeck to
X! simulate the event, completely destroying the simulation.
X! Riker is exonerated, and all is well.

X! She finds life signs on the Ent-C, and they hear a distress call from Capt.
X! Garrett, who says the ship has been attacked by Romulan Warbirds.
X! Riker, Geordi, Crusher and Yar beam over (with strict instructions from
X! Picard not to say anything about where or when they are),
X! rescue the survivors, and commence repairs.
X! After initial repairs are underway, Guinan comes up to talk to Picard.

X! Picard informs her that she's 22 years into her future, 
X! and that the destruction of the outpost plunged the Federation and the Klingons 
X! into 20 years of war.
X! (Data's analysis shows clearly that the -C will not survive if it returns.)

X! Meanwhile, Yar has befriended the only other surviving bridge officer of the -C,
X! Lt. Richard Castillo,
X! and the two go to Garrett with the ship partially restored.
X! Garrett appoints Castillo liaison officer to the -D, and returns to

X! Picard demands more evidence from Guinan,
X! and refuses to send them back without a firm reason.
X! Guinan cannot give any, but invokes their long history together to convince
X! him that she doesn't make a stand like this unless she knows she's right.
X! Picard agrees, and prepares to send them back,
X! over the objections of most of the bridge crew (though Data does
X! say that even if they are destroyed, it might be considered a ``meaningful'' act
X! of honor by the Klingons and prevent the war anyway).
X! Picard tells Garrett of his decision,
X! and informs her privately that the war in the present is going 
X! badly (Starfleet Command is projecting defeat within 6 months).
X! She agrees, and as Picard returns to the -D,
X! Yar stays for a moment to say goodbye to Castillo.

X! Suddenly, one Klingon Bird of Prey decloaks and fires, shrugging off the -D's
X! phasers, damaging the -C, and killing Capt. Garrett.
X! Castillo asks permission to take the ship back himself,
X! and though Riker objects, Picard grants it.

X! Yar confronts Guinan about the way Guinan's looked at her.
X! Eventually, Guinan tells her that in the other timeline,
X! she died an empty death.
X! Yar then requests a transfer to the -C from Picard, telling him that she 
X! may at least be able to provide the ship with the extra seconds or minutes it 
X! needs to change history.
X! Picard agrees, and Castillo welcomes Yar aboard.

X! As the -C prepares to enter the rift, 3 Birds of Prey attack, and the -D is 
X! forced to remain and defend the -C.
X! Although they manage to destroy one, the odds go against them,
X! and after a containment field is damaged (coupled with a
X! coolant leak), only two minutes remain until a warp-core breach.
X! With 52 seconds until the -C enters the rift, the Klingons demand surrender,
X! and Picard refuses, allowing his bridge to go up in flames first.
X! The -C passes through the rift\-and suddenly, everything is as it was.

X! relearning the experience himself.
X! After Lal assimilates curiosity correctly
X! and responds with many, many questions, Data decides to send her to school.
X! Meanwhile, Admiral Halftel of the Daystrom Institute wants Lal transferred down
X! to the Institute where she will be ``safe'', but without Data.
X! Picard tells him he thinks that would be a bad idea,
X! and Halftel consults with Starfleet Command.
X! Meanwhile, Data finds that school is not working out so well\-the other children
X! are frightened of Lal and laugh at her.
X! He goes to Bev for advice, but when she
X! suggests love and attention, he claims to be incapable of giving her love.

X! Later, Picard is wakened by a transmission from Halftel\-he is en route to 
X! review Lal's development, and if not satisfied, he will take her back with him.
X! Later still, Data completes the final transfers from his brain to hers (which is
X! how he created her brain in the first place), and leaves her in 10-Forward to 
X! learn about observing humanity from Guinan.
X! (While there, Lal exceeds Data's abilities by using a contraction.)
X! Later, after Lal's tested her observations 
X! about flirting (on Riker, no less), she laments to him that she cannot feel

X! When Halftel arrives, he seems already determined to take Lal,

X! and all three hurry to Data's lab.
X! Data finds a major malfunction has occurred,
X! and he and Halftel begin trying to save her.
X! Sadly, they cannot, and Lal ``dies''

X! When Kurn claims Worf's Klingon blood has thinned, Worf attacks him, and Kurn

X! unofficially adopted by their father's friend and not told of his true heritage

X! When Worf tells Picard this, and says that if his challenge fails, he too
X! will die as a traitor, Picard refuses to grant leave, saying instead the ship 
X! will accompany them to the homeworld of the Klingon Empire.
X! Later, Worf invites Kurn to be his cha'Dlch (or second),
X! but tells him not to reveal his heritage.

X! When Worf beams down to challenge, the son of his father's rival, Duras, claims 
X! he has forsaken his heritage.
X! He then reads the charges, saying that Mogh sent the defense codes of the
X! outpost to the Romulans seconds before the shields fell,

X! Then, while Data begins analyzing all available data on the Khitomer massacre,
X! the chair of the High Council, K'mpec, privately urges Worf to leave,
X! promising that the challenge will be forgotten if he does.
X! Some time later, Duras waylays Kurn with assassins, tells him he knows 
X! of his parentage, and when Kurn refuses to turn aside from Worf, stabs him.

X! Picard to serve in his stead, who accepts.
X! Meanwhile, Data and company have found Duras's evidence: a transmission from

X! that was nearby at the time shows that something's being hidden.
X! As the council reconvenes, Bev announces she's located the only other
X! survivor of Khitomer: Worf's nurse, Kahlest.
X! Picard finds her in the city, and overcomes her initial 
X! refusal to testify, convincing her to come and help Worf.

X! When they still say they cannot let this evidence be heard,
X! and that Worf will still be condemned,
X! Worf offers them something more effective than his death: he will 
X! accept ``discommodation'' (or being cast out) if Kurn's life is spared.
X! They agree, and as Worf is cast out,

X! he (or his children) can restore Mogh's honor.

X! ``Picard'' is still there.

X! Picard finds the other two captives there with him: Haro, a Starfleet cadet 
X! from Boleas Five, and Kovar Tholl, a philosopher from Mizar Two.
X! Neither can explain how they arrived, and neither has seen their captors.
X! Meanwhile, ``Picard'' diverts the ship to a nearby pulsar,
X! at only Warp 2 (thus delaying an upcoming rendezvous) and tells Riker
X! privately that he'll be a bit more close-mouthed than usual for the time being.
X! As Picard analyzes the door in the lab,
X! trying to get out, and theorizes as to why they specifically might have been 
X! taken, the fourth captive appears: Esogg,
X! a bloodthirsty alien from the planet Chalnoth.
X! Picard manages to convince him they are only captives like him, but
X! they quickly find Esogg and Tholl do not get along\-and further, Esogg cannot
X! eat the food that's been provided.
X! 
X! Meanwhile, ``Picard'' pulls Troi out of the poker game to ask her to keep an eye
X! on the crew for him, and after getting a physical (which reads perfectly 
X! normal), invites Bev to dinner in his quarters.
X! Then, Picard, Esogg and Haro try to override the lock mechanism (Tholl declines,
X! saying he's been punished once), and are knocked out by stun-beams.
X! After they revive, accusations start
X! flying that perhaps one of them \f3is\f1 the captor in disguise, and when Picard
X! is accused, Haro leaps to his defense, mentioning Mintaka III, and then, when
X! Picard mentions it, the recent plague.
X! Meanwhile, ``Picard'' suggests to Bev that their relationship intensify,
X! and then changes his tone just as she's about to give in.
X! The crew's confusion intensifies when Picard starts up an old
X! drinking song in 10-Forward, and Riker meets with the major bridge officers to
X! discuss what's to be done.
X! 
X! As the Enterprise reaches the pulsar, ``Picard'' orders the ship closer, and 
X! still closer, until if his orders are obeyed, the ship will be destroyed.
X! Riker relieves him of command and takes over.
X! Then, after Picard manages, with Haro's help, to override the stun-mechanism,
X! and then all four of them manage to open the door (which, unfortunately,
X! leads to a blank wall), he exposes Haro as an 
X! impostor (the plague, you see, was classified as secret).
X! Haro then vanishes, and three identical aliens appear and tell them they
X! were examining authority, and mention the doubles.
X! One of them returns Picard to the Enterprise (at which
X! point the duplicate Picard turns into another of these aliens), and Picard 
X! silently manages to order them taken captive.
X! After showing them that holding
X! people captive, even benevolently, is harmful, he orders them off the ship.

X! Upon his arrival, a girl crashes into him, and then when she sees a 
X! Ferengi, kisses him soundly hello.

X! Picard tries to relax by the pool, but keeps getting interrupted by women who 
X! ask if they can make his stay more pleasant.
X! Eventually, he discovers the horgon is a symbol of sexuality,
X! and puts the thing away.
X! A short time after that, Sovak, the Ferengi,
X! orders him to keep away from the woman and that the disk 
X! (whatever that may be) belongs to him.
X! Picard, however, is none too impressed, and orders him off.
X! Then, Vash, the woman who kissed him earlier, shows up again,
X! and when he realizes that she is the woman Sovak spoke of, he leaves in a
X! huff, but not before Vash slips the disk into his pocket.
X! He returns to his room, only to find the two aliens waiting for him.
X! They claim to be Vorgons, from the 27th century, and tell him of the Tox Uthat,
X! a weapon from their time which is now hidden on Risa.
X! They say that Picard will discover the Uthat here, 
X! and ask that he give it to them when he do so.
X! 
X! Picard then finds the disk, and confronts Vash with it.
X! As it happens, the disk contains all the research of a professor
X! Vash used to work for, who spent his life searching for the Uthat.
X! She wants to find it to give it to the Daystrom
X! Institute, and Sovak wants to sell it.
X! Picard says he'll go in her place to find it, but Vash insists on coming along.
X! As they prepare to leave, Sovak catches them and threatens them,
X! saying he paid Vash to steal the disk for him, so it's his.
X! Picard grabs the gun and punches him out, and he and Vash leave.
X! 
X! As they eventually reach the caves, they camp for the night.
X! Vash admits that Sovak paid her, but says he got what he deserved.
X! Picard and Vash, each impressed with the other,
X! end up spending very little of the evening sleeping.
X! As they arrive at where the Uthat should be, the Vorgons appear to watch, 
X! surprising Vash.
X! Even more surprisingly, Sovak appears, having used a copy of
X! the disk that Vash left behind, and orders them to keep digging for him.
X! However, even after hours, they find nothing, perplexing the Vorgons, and 
X! stupefying Sovak, whom they leave to keep digging on his own.
X! The next morning, Picard, not fooled at all,
X! confronts Vash and gets her to admit that she went to
X! the cave earlier and got the Uthat then.
X! She admits it, and then the Vorgons show up.
X! However, when Vash warns Picard that these two may well have been the
X! thieves who tried to steal the Uthat in the first place, he destroys it rather
X! than give it to them.
X! He kisses Vash goodbye, then returns to the ship.

X! a Warbird (which only ran this fast by irreparably damaging its engines)
X! decloaks and lightly damages the Enterprise\-just

X! and when Data suggests that he beam over with Tam to keep an eye on him,

X! involving Troi as ``the goddess of empathy''), Wes, Geordi, Data,
X! and Duffy (another engineer) discuss Barclay in 10-Forward.
X! Then, inexplicably, Duffy's glass starts leaking.

X! Upon further analysis,
X! they find the molecular structure of the glass has been altered.
X! When Geordi asks Reg to run a full Level-1 diagnostic to check into this,
X! he's surprised to find Reg was already going to, to check on the antigrav.
X! Data suggests the two incidents could be related,
X! but later claims it was Reg's idea to Picard.
X! Picard is happy to hear it, but accidentally calls Barclay
X! ``Broccoli'' himself, further dampening Reg's self-confidence.
X! Later, Guinan defends Reg to Geordi,
X! saying that most of his actions are because of how he's 
X! been treated, not just the reverse.
X! Unfortunately, when Geordi finds Reg this time,

X! or demand a transfer, but suggests he root himself a bit more in reality, and

X! Then, as if that weren't enough, Transporter 3 malfunctions.

X! and frequently suggests to him that he just ``sit in the chair'' and behave.

X! Data's seeming death, and tells Picard and Riker he can find no reason for the 
X! explosion...except pilot error, which is virtually impossible for Data.

X! While Data tries to suborn Fajo's assistant Varria (who tells Data of Fajo's
X! lavishness, both in rewards and in punishments), Picard chooses Worf as the new 
X! Ops officer.
X! Fajo then tries many ways to get Data to sit in his chair and be a 
X! good little toy, including dissolving his uniform (to make him wear the clothes 
X! Fajo wants), and claiming to be Data's liberator\-here, he says, Data cannot be 
X! called upon to violate his ``fundamental respect'' for life by killng.
X! Data, however, eventually pretends to be naught more than a mannequin,
X! embarrassing Fajo in front of his friend and rival.
X! Meanwhile, while Troi tries to help Worf
X! get used to replacing another dead crewmate, Geordi realizes Data didn't 
X! entirely follow protocol on the last trip (suggesting that there may have been 
X! something wrong with him), and when they reach the Beta Agni system, they find 
X! evidence that the contaminant may have been deliberately planted.
X! Upon further inspection,
X! they realize that the whole thing may have been an elaborate game to
X! obtain Data, and head for the site of the shuttle explosion.

X! Meanwhile, Varria, whom Fajo earlier threatened with a particularly nasty
X! disruptor to get Data to sit in his chair, tells Data she'll help him escape if

X! While the Enterprise slowly tracks Fajo down, Varria
X! starts the escape pod's launch sequence, only to be overpowered by security.
X! After Data removes the security, Fajo comes in and shoots Varria with one of the
X! disruptors, then claims the blood is on Data's hands.

X! and despite Fajo's confidence that Data cannot shoot, being ``only an
X! android'' pulls the trigger\-only to have the Enterprise beam him aboard just as

X! due to a very rare malady contracted by aged Vulcans known as Bendai's syndrome,

X! confronts Sarek's young aide Sakkath about his odd behavior (checking to see
X! how Picard's diplomatic skills are, and so forth), and eventually finds that
X! Sarek indeed suffers from the disease, and that Sakkath has been trying to

X! This will jeopardize the treaty
X! with the Legarans (since Sarek's the only one they'll speak to), but Picard
X! is forced to convince Sarek of this anyway, over the objections of both 
X! Perrin and Sarek's chief of staff, Mendrossen (also a human).

X! Picard manages to convince Sarek of his ailment (by driving him virtually 
X! incoherent with rage, which he shouldn't be able to do), but is then struck

X! but she thinks her family is her friends on the Enterprise.

X! and rigs the warp engines to modulate the subspace static
X! into a pattern the Enterprise will recognize.
X! By this time, the Ferengi CMO has caught on to what Lwaxana is doing,
X! and is brutally examining her with their mind-probe.
X! The Enterprise, having returned to Betazed after their study
X! (and, by the way, the nebula was giving off interference,
X! cutting their communications off) and discovered what happened,
X! catch on to Riker's subspace static, but as a result of staying behind to help,
X! Wesley misses the shuttle\-and thus, his chance at the Academy this year.
X! 
X! They eventually find the Ferengi ship Creighton, but things have changed
X! by the time they arrive.
X! Lwaxana has made a deal for Deanna and Will's safety;
X! if Tog lets them go, she'll remain behind willingly.
X! Deanna and Will return, and Picard,
X! by pretending to be a jealous lover of Lwaxana's, scares Tog into

X! doing so), while the Enterprise conducts a quick, nearby mission studying a

X! While Riker and Deanna stroll around the fields,
X! they run into Lwaxana (with Mr. Homn in attendance, of course)\-and then,
X! worse still, all three of them are kidnapped by DaiMon Tog and taken
X! on board his ship, the Creighton.

X! After Riker and the Trois awake in a cell, Tog beams the two women over to him,
X! without clothing.
X! As Lwaxana pretends to be interested in both of Tog's
X! propositions (and Deanna returns to the cell), and keeps him relaxed and
X! distracted, in a state of sexual pleasure, Riker tricks the Ferengi first
X! officer into letting him out of the cell, but he and Deanna quickly find that to
X! send out a communication, they need Tog's security code.
X! Unfortunately, when
X! Lwaxana tries to get the code out of Tog (ostensibly to fix him a drink), the
X! Ferengi doctor catches her, and insists to be allowed to probe her brain to find
X! out how her telepathy works, despite the fact that it might kill her.

X! Meanwhile, the Enterprise leaves the nebula, restoring communications, and 
X! discover from one of the Betazoid heads of state, Reittan Grax, that Riker and 
X! the Trois have been kidnapped.
X! Unfortunately, they have no idea where the 
X! Creighton might be, and cannot decode Ferengi transmissions.

X! Riker taps into the warpfield phase shifter and modulates the static into a 
X! pattern the Enterprise will recognize.
X! Unfortunately, since only Wesley recognizes it,
X! he's forced to miss his transport to the Academy to help rescue Riker.
X! As they begin to track the Creighton down, Lwaxana offers Tog a deal: if he
X! sends Riker and Deanna back, she will stay with him, and serve
