A while ago I posted a request for a comprehensive resource in
which to look up various reagents and their common uses.  I feel I
have been remiss in posting the two which were suggested to me, but
I was in exams and out of town.  Several people have requested this
information, and it has been sent to them individually.

I've found the 'Big Red Book' ('Current Protocols in Molecular
Biology') to be quite helpful in explaining the theory and practice of
the techniques it covers.  There are 'Background' sections for each
protocol.

You may find "The concise encyclopaedia
of biochemistry" of use, published by
Walter de Gruyter.  There is now an
update of the earlier 1983 edition.
