Rather than double buffering the display (a pretty expensive way to stop the color separation) John is using a color map that places all of the most commonly used colors and backgrounds in separate bits of the bitplane. That way the effect only becomes apparent for unusual combinations. This is IMHO a really neat way to approach the problem.
