If it is a Series 30, try tcio -icZ The 300 version of tcio (on output) will write a file-mark (zero-length record) as the first block, and expecting to find one on input, will skip the first block (1024 physical record) on input unless told not to ("Z"). I don't know offhand if the 500 tcio writes a zlr, but it might be worth a try.
