The trick was that the zmodem I got from uunet.uu.net was quite old, while
the zmodem on sumex-aim.stanford.edu is not so old.  Using sz v3.03 and
rz v3.00 all now seems to be OK.  Thanks to Barry Brown <bebrown@UCSD.EDU>
for pointing this out.
