This is NOT a feature of the optical drive--it is a feature of the Berkeley Fast File System. If the system is changing things on you, you're probably hovering very close to 90% full. Time optimization is the default on most filesystems; see the man page for "newfs" for more information and metainformation. -=EPS=-
