Can anyone explain or at least show me where to find information about
.gf files created by metafont.   I have the METAFONT book but that gives
very little information about the .gf files.   I need this to save a lot
of time as I have been converting digitized pictures to METAFONT
characters,  this works very well but I would like to skip out using
METAFONT as it is far too slow (3 hours for a 640 x 400 picture!!!).
