  Another down-to-earth description can be found in "Cryptography and Data
  Security", Dorothy Denning, 1983.  (Sorry, I forgot who the publisher is.)

  I had a similar question a couple weeks ago, and I thought that book 
  provided a very clear explanation of RSA, DES et al.
