This sounds to me as though something is causing the server to dump
core.  Why those particular clients provoke it I haven't a clue.  Look
for a core file in the directory you started xinit from (you may need
to "unlimit coredumpsize" or the analog thereof (that's the csh way) in
order to get the coredump).  A stack trace from the server would be
necesary to even guess what might be going wrong....
