Perhaps you could use black and white colors and instead of
  relying on motif doing the shadow colors, you could set
  shadow bitmaps using the resource manager.  These bitmaps
  would be in only black and white, so they should show up
  in your xwd dumps.  They might not look very good in 
  one pixel width lines though.
