Norcross, Georgia Lines: 31 In article <2631@igloo.scum.com>, George Wang asks: - Is it possible to do standard FAXES (send & receive) with SOFTWARE - only and no special fax hardware.... I have a USR Robotics 14.4K - HST with the new V.42bis mod... - - I heard there is a program for MicroSoft Windows 2.X called - Power Page which lets you do this.. Is this true?? No, it is NOT possible to communicate with fax machines from standard PC modems. The modems you and I most often use have Bell 103, Bell 212, CCITT V.22, V.22bis, and V.32 modulation schemes, with possibly a proprietary scheme thrown in for good measure (Hayes ping-pong, USR HST, Telebit multicarrier, etc). Fax uses other modulation schemes: CCITT V.21, V.27ter, V.29, and soon to be V.17 for higher speeds. There is no way to "fake" a modulation scheme in software -- your hardware has to support it. You CAN send your faxes through a third party (e.g., Compuserve, MCI Mail, AT&T Mail, etc.), but THEY have to have the hardware (fax modems) to communicate with the fax machine. -- Toby ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Toby Nixon, Principal Engineer Fax: +1-404-441-1213 Telex: 6502670805 Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc.
