Thanks to all who replied to my question on MODE as a TSR.  It turns out 
that MODE will work with programs like MARK and RELEASE (though I haven't
gotten my hands on them to try it out.)

But, of course, there was a simpler solution.  Simply MODE LPT1 directs the
output back to the parallel printer, where MODE LPT1=LPT1 does not, which is
where all the confusion started in the first place.
