After mentioning the geography server I've gotten a number of queries
about it.

There's a section on it in the Internet Resource Guide, which can be
FTPed from nnsc.nsf.net.  The Geographic Name Server is part of Chapter
M (for Miscellaneous), section 3, so ftp the file:

    resource-guide/chapter.M/sectionM-3.ps
or
    resource-guide/chapter.M/sectionM-3.txt

where ps and txt get you the postscript and ascii versions respectively.
