Companies that say they run with packet drivers generally mean class 1 (DIX Ethernet) packet drivers, as these have historically been the only ones around. This changed with the introduction of the SLIP driver, which is class 6, but people still tend to think of all packet drivers as using the same interface, when, in fact, the interface to a packet driver changes with any change in how the packet header is structured.
