Whether or not editing out the citation can be considered censorship
isn't really relevant (and really isn't interesting).  Removing the
reference was dishonorable and in conflict with existing citation
practice.  One of the authors has verified that the book was used
in writing the software.  I am hard-pressed to think of circumstances
under which it might be acceptable to fail to acknowledge one's sources.
