You may have already thought of this, but: go into the options menu (can't remember which one offhand - I've just gotten the demo) and change the backspace to NON-destructive. It defaults to a destructive backspace, and would very probably cause the screen "glitch" you're seeing. I was having similar problems testing it in VI yesterday until I remembered "Hey! The backspace is destructive!" I flipped it to non-destructive and all was well... - R'ykandar.
