I presume it is for the "cheaper" software. Why not run AmigaDOS >instead? What would UNIX buy him in this case? Well, you're right. He could run AmigaDOS for the AmigaDOS applications. The UNIX platform (IMHO) is somewhat nicer to use, however. Of course, you can boot UNIX when UNIX is desired, and boot AmigaDOS when that is required. The problem is that every UNIX that I have ever used, has required a shutdown sequence, to verify that everything was hunky-dory. Now-a-days, this is a relatively quick and painless procedure, even for systems with large amounts of disk space, but it is still a hassle. And of course, interprocess communication between programs on different operating systems is impossible (well, it *could* be done, but it's impractical). It would be *really nice* (and that's what we're talking about here, isn't it?), to have AmigaDOS applications run under the UNIX system. Whether the real-time performance is affected for the AmigaDOS applications, depends on whether Commodore has added any extensions to SVR4. I think I remember seeing that it hadn't, but it hasn't added AmigaDOS as a 'guest' yet, either. The real solution of course, is for all the applications to be written for the UNIX system, but that may take awhile. :-< Brad -- Brad Spear Locus Computing Corporation spear@locus.com Inglewood, CA, USA Disclaimer: I speak for no one but myself.
