I personally feel that the availability of pirated software probably contrib-
uted to Commodore's sales for a while at least.  I know many people who
bought a Commodore after seeing how many bootleg games were floating 
around. (and probably wouldn't have bought them if they had to pay $30/game.)
As to the ethics, that's another story.

Just some thoughts.
