Folks,

Well, I got a number of helpful replies, some of which
suggested talking to HP Customer Support  8-)
(one of which was from HP Customer Support).
Anyway, a patch is available/automatically distributed 
to people under support contracts
(in fact, you apparently get versions 4.0 *and* 2.16).

For others, I think I managed to hack it by uninterning 
(with unintern-foreign-symbol of whatever)
a bunch of foreign symbols that were getting redefined.

I also got friendly mail from Allegro and IBUKI representatives...

Seriously, I like HP, screaming to the net was just easier 
at the time.
