The HP 98700A/H, now discontinued, is the oldest bit-map display on the Series 300 (and was actually designed for an earlier computer line). There never was any X-server code for it, and none is planned. Part of the reason no server code exists is that the 98700A processor was optimized for vector operations, and raster-op performance was not considered adequate for X-windows. If you aren't otherwise using the transform engine features, you could keep the CRT monitor and replace the 98700A processor and 98287A interface with a 98547A or 98549A video board. Both are supported by X11 and would provide improved raster-op performance.
