The Internet is a meta-network- an internetwork of many networks running TCP/IP. Some of its major constituents are NSFNET, MILNET and CSNET (partly). ARPANET is mostly phased out. The capital I in "Internet" is important because "internet" just refers to an internetwork as opposed to THE Internet. Look at Quarterman's "The Matrix" for more info.
