It sounds like what you want is a total amount of memory in use, which is reported by /usr/ucb/vmstat. That is on a VAXstation II/Ultrix 3.1. It should be available in RISC Ultrix. Vmstat will report avm (Active Virtual Memory) and fre (Free Memory) in 1k pages. It also reports various disk and controller statistics.
