Several kind folks have pointed me to the scripts included in the distribution 
which can deal with the problem of maintaining X for different 
platforms from a single source tree.  

I knew I shoulda spent some time looking at those scripts.... :-)

Thanks all for you help, I will investigate the lndir script... 
(and all the others as well... Hummm, I wonder 
how many scripts I've replicated for maintaining the dist.... )
