While the poster makes some valid points, I think overall, the US plan is much easier to understand *and verify.* (I've used both the meter and the US (really North American) systems.) It's much easier to understand that a call costs x cents a minute and see it show up that way on your bill. I believe the vast majority of long distance calls are billed to a credit card these days, or at least a third number. Having a meter based system just for coin calls when home and businesses receive time based calls would not make a lot of sense either.
