Thanks very much for all your responses. I was sure that all the defaults 
of the VAP user and my own were the same, so I never bothered to check the
DISPLAY parameter. You were all correct in identifying this as the problem. 
I put in the following in the VAP .cshrc, and all is fine

	setenv DISPLAY unix:0.0
