From the man page on Mach-O(5):

  The combined sections are aligned to their original alignment in the combined
  section.

Ah ha!  That clears that up.  Actually, I understood it the fifth read.

As Sylvia would say, "Students: use the words 'combined' and 'align' once
more in this sentence."
