O.K., I'm not giving up.... yet.

Recently, I posted a request for information regarding printing from
386 machines running Interactive Unix over a TCP/IP network to a
Mac SE with Ethernet card to a Laserwriter connected via LocalTalk.

The responses I have received indicated we need to purchace a Gateway
such as the Shiva Fast Path, or the Cayman GatorBox, etc..  Naturally,
I am looking for alternatives since these devices are priced from $1500
to more than $2500.  My company doesn't want to pay those kind of prices.

I understand that EtherTalk and AppleTalk are available on DOS machines.
Is there a device/software that will convert TCP/IP into EtherTalk or
AppleTalk at the DOS machine level?  Would it be possible to make this
'back door' route function enough to print a file from one of the Unix
boxes to the Laserwriter?  How?

What about going the other direction?  Could we hang the Laserwriter off
of one of the Unix boxes with a serial line and print from the Mac to a
DOS machnine an then to a Unix box, and finally, to the Laserwriter?

Any help you have to offer will be greatly appreciated.
