They could also detect 1MB chip ram, which would be about 90% reliable. Of course, that would also tag early 2000s. Anyway, the comment I made about detecting which machine 2.0 was running in was more tongue-in-cheek than anything else. If CBM _wanted_ to only upgrade the 2000 and no the 500, they could merely print "2000 Upgrade" on the box, and then only the informed people would buy it for their 500. I believe it was Randall Jesup (sp?) that said there was at least one pin difference that would require a different version of one chip, or at least a kluged socket to go between the original socket and the chip. I assume that (being from CBM -- although not an official rep (ie. We can't hold him to it. :-) ) he is correct.
