Duuh ... don't want to start a big argument, but I believe all X applications have to cater for a redraw in case the X server cannot find enough backing store to save the obscured part of the window. Sure, it's a real pain doing your own redraw; if your friendly system operator can optimise the server, fine. Else, you have to provide redraw facilities.
