Apple has made three distinct different 3.5" drives - the original Mac external, the UniDisk 3.5, and the Apple 3.5. The Mac external only works with a UDC on an Apple II - nothing except the Mac supports it directly. The UniDisk 3.5 works with the new (upgraded motherboard) //c, and a //e with a controller card. Technically it also works with a gs through the SmartPort, but not very well. The Apple 3.5 works on the gs SmartPort, the //e with a UDC, and on newer (SE and above) Macs.
