I've found Harkyn's castle, the candle, the bell, and the skull, and wandered around the underground caverns; try as I might, I can't find the hermit or the magic shop. I could give you a few pointers that kept me from dying early in the game, however. 1) I find more CON, DEX, and CHR are good to start out with. I wouldn't put much in INT and WIS. 2) Beraku, since he's the god of the closest town. I haven't been able to find other gods yet. 3) The dagger's fine, until you've defeated the spiders in the forest. You'll find a scimitar there. 4) I find the scimitar's sufficient. Later in the game, you'll rely mostly on magic and prayers anyway. 5) Armor? Nope, I don't use any. They don't protect you sufficiently to justify the cost. Save the money for the Traveler's Inn. 6) No shields required. 7) The only one I've used is Cure. You might need a cure potion in case a monster poisons you (before you reach cure prayer level). 8) If you're CHR's high, you can barter with the shopkeeper until he becomes insulted; then barter with him again for the cut-off price. The top price for daggers are 4 gold pieces. 9) Don't bother with the barkeep until you've got plenty of jewels. He'll talk with just 5 gold pieces. 10) Before reaching Fireball magic level, retreat when you meet giant ants. They're really nasty to deal with. Another nasty monster is the stalker. Giant rats are easy to fight. 11) Magic, prayer, yep. You'll find you'll use fireball, power, heal, and magic missles a lot. 12) Good starting strategies: Run to the town ASAP. Inside, you can duck into the temple and rest up (lower your fatigue) by continually praying (helps good standing with Beraku to boot). If you're lucky, you can avoid most giant ant hordes. Don't go into the inn the first time a "It's been a long day" message pops up. Keep fighting/praying. Wait until the fourth or fifth message to go into the inn. You'll need plenty of money just for the inn. On the second or third day, run to the cemetary and let Beraku Turn Undead the undead monsters. You'll get experience plus some undead bone reagents. Once you know fireball, go and tackle giant spiders. After the fourth day, you should be able to wander around the underground caverns. Try to find some creepers, they'll probably leave you some Jewels ($$$). -=/\=- Peter Lien plien@encore.com uunet!encore.com!plien plien@encore.UUCP
