system:  mac IIfx, apple 2 page video card & apple 3 page monitor
         4 bit video memory on card
         all other nubus slots empty
         no INITS or cdevs except apples own

problem: 

when the card is set to 2 bit mode, things seems OK..

when set to 4 bit gray scale, all menus turn to a white letter on 
gray instead of a normal black letters on white.  

the machine will also hangs on start up and requires a floppy start!

i 'rescued' the system by reinstalling the system software 6.0.5
and staying within 2 bit mode.

has anyone experienced similar problems?  
do i have a flaky video card?
is there hardware incompatibility somewhere.

Can anybody help?
