I also did this a few weeks back, for my 4meg SE. I'm an init junkie, and 
I was having serious problems with memory allocation. Anyway, just as you
described, I upped the number from about 128k to about 320k (stick to 32k
and 64k increments). rebooted, no change. Upped it again. no appreciable 
change. And again. And again. Well, I finally started to see some 
improvement by the time it was up to about 768k. However, it didn't add
640k to the system heap (at least not according to the About the Finder
box).
