I believe the Desktop Manager uses the B*Tree manager that Apple promised to give us in System 7.0. There was a chapter on it in the early 7.0 release notes (from a year ago). The B*Tree manager has existed within the file manager ever since HFS came out and the Desktop Manager simply took advantage of it. Apple promised to give us access to this manager with 7.0, but I guess this is one of the new features that got put off (longer than everything else, that is!:-).
