Which version of the Sun Operating System are you running?  Latest versions
have support for, and enable, synchronous operation.  Prior to the latest
version, support seemed to be there, but was not enabled although it could
be with an adb patch to the kernel.  Earlier still versions did not
support synchronous operation, and neither did earlier hardware.
