It doesn't work. More specifically, it can't seem to deal with PostScript fonts. I didn't have this problem with dvips 4.9. (I had an entirely different problem with dvips 4.9, which I won't go into here.) I have virtual fonts installed. As an example, I have a TeX document which uses New Century Schoolbook. In the document I define the font as \font\rm=cent at 12pt. NewCenturySchlbk-Roman.tfm and cent.tfm are installed in the proper tfm area and cent.vf is in the proper vf area. My psfonts.map file is set up correctly. I don't have Metafont installed, so I didn't bother with MakeTeXPK. Now here's what happens: [hayes] 1 % dvips foo This is dvips, version 5.3 (C) 1986-90 Radical Eye Software ' TeX output 1990.07.30:1036' - MakeTeXPK NewCenturySchlbk-Roman 360 300 magstep\(1.0\) sh: MakeTeXPK: not found dvips: Font NewCenturySchlbk-Roman.360pk not found, characters will be left blank. dvips: Font NewCenturySchlbk-Italic.360pk not found, characters will be left blank. [tex.pro]. [1] Why is dvips trying to open a pk file? It's never going to find one -- these fonts are built in to the printer. What's the bloody problem here? But seeing as you're not quite as clever as I am -- in fact, none of you are anywhere near as clever as I am -- we'll do it this way."
