Howdy; good to hear from you.  But please send beta bugs to me, rather
than to the world.  Version 5.31 (another beta) should be available in
a few days; 5.4 will be the release.

Strangely, there never was a dvips 4.9; it went up to about 4.23 or
something before I started on 5.x.

I'm not sure what the problem is; it sure seems to work for me.  Please
send a tar/shar with all relevant files to me and I'll find and fix the
problem.  Keep an eye out for 5.31!  And thanks for your help.
