I am using the "tabular" environment in LaTeX to create
tables, and I would like to be able to center an entry
in a column vertically, so that it spans 2 rows.  This would
correspond to vertically spanning in tbl.  (What I want is
not satisfied by defining an extra row between the original
two; I don't want the extra space between them.)

How does one do this?  Please send email.  (Anyone who wants
copies of the responses may email me, also.)
