For the life of me, I can't figure this out, and it must be trivial... 
I even looked at the errata in the manual (something I never do!)
as well as the style files and latex.tex.  Please... where is this
covered???

The problem:  resetting \parsep and \itemsep in the following declaration 
just doesn't take.  I want the items separated by nothing at all, and
always get the default spacing (this is in the second level of nesting,
the only place I use this environment).

\newenvironment{en2}{\begin{list}{\alph{ena}}{\usecounter{ena}
\setlength{\parsep}{0pt}\setlength{\itemsep}{0pt}}}{\end{list}}
