Keywords: Wolfram, Bays, Dewdney, Armchair Universe, Addresses Sender: news@usenet.ins.cwru.edu Reply-To: muaddib@usenet.ins.cwru.edu Organization: Case Western Reserve Univ. Cleveland, Ohio, (USA) Date: Sat, 4 Aug 90 20:06:37 GMT Lines: 49 About a week ago, I sent a letter to Stephen Wolfram, using the address given in A. K. Dewdney's "The Armchair Universe." I was trying to get information on the CA images and "Glider Gun Guidelines" materials cited in the book. I took a gamble that the address may no longer be current, and it appears not to be. For those who don't have the book handy, the address given is: Stephen Wolfram Center for Complex Systems Research 508 South 6th Street Urbana, IL 61801 In today's mail, I got back the envelope (and letter) I sent, unopened. The only thing different about the envelope was a sticker on it bearing a (somewhat) cryptic message: CENT504 618204032 1289 08/01/90 FORWARDING TIME EXPIRED :CCSR 405 N MATHEWS AVE URBANA IL 61801-2325 RETURN TO SENDER I confess some confusion as to what this message means. Is the CCSR address cited on the sticker the current one? If so, what does the "Forwarding Time Expired" mean? Did the USPS try to find Wolfram, but couldn't, and ran out of some set time they give for these things? Or did Wolfram have some forwarding address which has expired? While I'm on the subject, I sent a similar letter the same day as the Wolfram letter to Carter Bays (about 3-D Life), and also used the address attributed to him in "Armchair": Carter Bays Department of Computer Science University of South Carolina Columbia, SC 29208 I haven't gotten anything back yet, but to be on the safe side, is this Bays' current address? In summary, if anyone knows about the whereabouts of Stephen Wolfram and Carter Bays (if Bays is no longer at USC), could they please post the information or email me? (muaddib@usenet.ins.cwru.edu) Thanks in advance.
