Just to close on this subject. I called AST Tech Support and spoke to a
knowledgeable g'man named Vern! He recognized the problem immediately and
shipped me BIOS upgrades for the machine and keyboard.

Having installed it, Terminal no longer trashes my keyboard and all is
well.
