Stir corn meal into boiling water, let stand until cool. Separate eggs. Beat egg yolk and add to cornmeal with the shortening, salt, buttermilk, and baking soda. Add the egg whites, beaten stiff. Pour into baking dish and bake 40 minutes at 425 degrees.
