An LM384 (about $2 from DigiKey and others) will do 5 watts, given a
24 volt power supply, 3 caps, a resistor, and a pot for a volume
control.  Radio Shack also has some easy IC answers to your problem.
Check out a National Semi IC manual that covers audio ICs for more
possibilities (e.g., using a two-channel chip in a bridge mode so 
you can get the power using a lower supply voltage...)
